Hi Trevon, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes: I’ve recently chosen to be slow to respond to questions, requests, and opportunities. This allows me to think clearly and as thoroughly as I naturally do, to fully consider what I am responding to – if I need to respond at all! This practice also gives me space to consult with Jesus about what I’m considering adding to my plate. I recommend it!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I record and perform music as Prophesee Levi, a disciple-making witness to the Goodness of Jesus Christ as I share my autobiography through Christian Rap & Poetry as well as Collaborative Creativity.
I disciple creatives like myself – writers and performing artists – as my allies. Side-by-side, we build profitable, structured lifestyles around our creative pursuits to earn a livable income that will impact and benefit our local communities. You are welcome to join our mailing list for an update on when we will begin welcoming artists of all disciplines into our new community of creatives!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I was known as Trevon Mosby, the once-timid, sweet kid in school who no one knew had a fire inside of him. When I emerged onto a high school talent show stage as the poetic, Lloyd Bank$ look-alike BlackBonez, I had stepped into who the world could imagine me to be. My lyrics were personal journal entries. My performances reflected the best-in-practice of 90’s and 2010’s Hip Hop. My punchlines had my peers and elders roaring in gratifying revelation on a monthly basis. I continued with this persona through my college years and entranced audiences of people who did not know me personally with my increasingly-thoughtful songs. I gained local acclaim and was sought-after for a time. My character and my talents gained me attention and trust from people that would never truly accept them.
The time has passed for me to pursue an industry-shifting deal with an established record company and be the world-renown, prolific lyricist I dreamed of becoming. As I remembered what Hip Hop acts I favored and I watched my life change through relocations, marriage, and parenthood, I began taking my relationship with Jesus more seriously than I believed I ever had. My growing pains are documented to be shared as a testament to who my God has always been to His Creation. My God-breathed worship music is an infinite reminder of who He says I am and what I’ve been meant to do with these talents: make them holy. I present my voice, my lyrics, and my whole heart to Jesus with my every performance. BlackBonez informs my new creative identity, Prophesee Levi, so that I can humanize the Greatness within me as my songs impact every human heart unto right relationship with Jesus.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I bombed at an open mic in Detroit. My fiancee was there with me. I fumbled through 3 songs. I rushed out of there so fast! I made up in my mind that evening that I was past my prime as a performer; that my lyrics were no longer impactful; that my voice had lost its power. I stopped any pursuit of music in favor of starting my new life of responsibility as a husband and a father. In the nonstop busyness of these pillars in my life, I lost my confidence as a man. This directly infected Prophesee Levi.
God presented me with opportunities to continue – to not give up or wallow in self-pity. Through mental and physical exhaustion as well as sleep deprivation and an incredible amount of distress, I heeded His encouragement and continued, nevertheless without confidence. It is only because of this ongoing practice of writing, recording, and sharing that I have regained my confidence as a man, writer, and performing artist – something I can and will only credit Jesus for!
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. BlackBonez was a mask. Prophesee Levi is me putting on my boldness and authority as a Child of the Living and only God. I have nothing to hide nor will I disguise my heart for Him to please people that do not accept the Truth as He is.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
“In the face of an unwelcoming, heartless job-hunting culture and a hurt and hoarding society of people, Trevon pressed in to build relationships with people who were desperate to make life work for them. No matter what he went through personally, he always spoke life into the people that supported him and built up the communities they – and he – lived in so that cities welcomed the people they were responsible for instead of holding an overwhelmed and overstimulated people responsible for the cities they occupied. He was long-winded. And he was full of the Truth. He was imperfect, he wasn’t right all the time – he was human! And he leveraged his humanity to empathize with everyone and fiercely love the ideas everyone brought to him. He did his very best to bring them to life, just as he had to bring his own to life to make this impact. This wounded boy became a man of informed faith in Jesus Christ, showing us all how to love the child inside of us each with the heart of Our Heavenly Father.”
