Story & Lesson Highlights with Kelly Brown of Detroit

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kelly Brown. Check out our conversation below.

Kelly, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
To God be the glory! I stood up to generational curses that have been hindering my family bloodline from generation to generation, which is causing the separation from the true inheritance that we deserve. I spoke back to fear, betrayal, mental health issues, sickness, dis-ease, division, separation, unhealthy cycles, poverty mindsets and more. With-in doing so it cost losing everything but my TRUTH.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Breaking Barriers: The Journey of Kelly Joy Brown

My name is Kelly Joy Brown, no titles can match being chosen by God. I’m a 41-year-old African American woman who hails from the vibrant West side of Detroit, Joy rd. and Piedmont. My roots are deep in my city, and like many, I’ve faced my fair share of struggles. But here’s the thing: I didn’t just survive—I thrived. I broke outta the ghetto!! not physically, but mental bondage that kept me and so many others stuck, in a hamster wheel lifestyle trying to find an authentic way out.

From Surviving to Thriving

Growing up in Detroit, I witnessed the harsh realities of life in the hood which was a sick cyclical cycle. (noted) I’m still in the community now with an owner mindset. Yet, I knew that my destiny was bigger than my circumstances. I decided to shift my mindset from a scarcity mentality to one of abundance. I’m not just breaking generational curses; I’m rewriting the narrative for myself and for those who come after me. Transformation isn’t just a buzzword for me—it’s a lifestyle. I believe that the real power lies within us, and that’s where my journey truly began. In 2009, I found myself seated on my couch, gazing into a closet full of clothes and shoes. On the surface, I appeared to have everything I could want, yet I felt an overwhelming emptiness inside. Despite my material possessions, I lacked a plan or purpose for my life. In that moment of introspection, I reached out to God, yearning for something greater. I was tired of living the monotonous “same old, same old.” It was clear that I needed a significant change.

The turning point came when I uttered a profound realization: “Oh shit, we’re in trouble.” Those words encapsulated my awareness of the deeper issues at play—not just in my life, but within my family and community as well. It was a wake-up call that prompted me to seek a deeper understanding of myself and my surroundings. I felt a divine nudge to take a step back and engage in a period of introspection that would last for two years. This time was not easy; it was a journey into the depths of my being, where I had to confront uncomfortable truths.

During these two years, I embarked on a path of unlearning and relearning. I began to strip away the unhealthy patterns and habits that had shaped my existence. This process was not just about identifying what was wrong; it was about rediscovering who I was beyond societal norms and family conditioning. I explored the ideas and beliefs that had been ingrained in me and questioned their validity. In doing so, I started to understand my true self—free from the shackles of external expectations.

The emotional landscape of my journey has been vast and varied. I have experienced pain and sorrow, but also joy, love, abundance and true PEACE. Each emotion was a teacher, providing insights that guided me toward greater awareness. I learned that life is not a straight line; it is a series of ups and downs that contribute to our growth and fulfillment. I embraced abundance and opportunities that came my way, transforming each experience into a building block for a richer life.

One of the most significant lessons I gleaned from this journey is the importance of taking risks on myself. Many people fear the unknown, allowing that fear to hold them back from pursuing their dreams. I discovered that the risks I took were worth the rewards. Each leap of faith opened new doors and led to experiences I had once thought impossible. Through my transformation, I realized it wasn’t just about my journey; it was about inspiring others to take risks in their own lives.

Today, I stand grateful for the life I have built through courage and determination. My journey has taught me that we all have the power to create our own heaven on earth. It’s a message I hold dear and share with others: the journey might be challenging, but it is through those challenges that we find our true selves.

In conclusion, my spiritual awakening in 2009 marked the beginning of a profound transformation. By embracing the journey of unlearning and relearning, I have navigated the complexities of life, emerging with a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. I urge others to take that leap of faith, for the journey is as rewarding as the destination.

A quote from the one and only Dick Gregory that changed my world and love to share with the readers is When the universe picks you: “what’s dangerous is when the universe picks you and you put on the magic glasses there’s rules that go with them. You can never take them off, you never see things that they supposed to be you see things as they are, and you can never force nobody else to wear them”

My brand “I Making Moves in Silence” lead with 2 other mantras “Everybody Can’t Go!” and “I Am The Interruption” Has become reality to many others. In a world where everyone wants to be seen, I learned the art of moving in silence. I understand that not everyone can go with you on your journey, and that’s okay. I can say “That’s okay now” but it was the hardest pruning process of letting go of the people you truly love and wanting nothing but best for them. “I’m Am The interruption” in the narrative—challenging the status quo and pushing boundaries. The whole wellness brand is about taking care of you, stepping outside the box and embracing your authentic self. It’s raw, real, and unapologetic.

Building My Brand, from the Ground Up!

What makes my brand special? It’s built from the ground up with transparency and authenticity at its core. I’ve stripped away the layers that once held me captive—those societal expectations, those fears of being judged because of my sexuality of being a lesbian and truly having an authentic relationship with God have freed me from the bondage of this world. I’ve learned to be free with my feelings and desires, allowing my truth to shine through. My journey isn’t just about me; it’s a movement for anyone looking to redefine their life.

Empowering My Community

As a stakeholder in my community, I’m dedicated to uplifting those around me. I believe in the power of transformation—not just for myself, but for everyone. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to do the internal work, to dig deep and confront what’s holding them back. It’s about tearing down the walls that confine us and stepping into the purpose that God has for each of us.

Freedom Through Acknowledgment

Since acknowledging my true self, I’ve embraced freedom in every sense. It’s been a journey of surrendering to what’s meant for me. I’m no longer bound by the expectations of others or the chains of my past. I’m here to let you know that if I can do it, so can you.

So, let’s keep pushing boundaries, breaking barriers, and walking in our truth. Together, we can create a legacy of empowerment and transformation. Remember, it all starts from within.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
From a young age, I grappled with the question of identity, feeling as though I was molded by the expectations of the world around me. My early life was characterized by a series of conditioned patterns, cycles, and habits that seemed to define me from birth. I was told what to eat, how to act, how to wear my hair, how to dress, what to like, who to love, and what marriage looks like all from other people perspective and some with no experiences, all of which contributed to a sense of disconnection with my true self. During my earlier years, from kindergarten through eighth grade, I experienced a controlled environment that stifled my ability to explore my individuality. This atmosphere cultivated a fearfulness and shyness within me, preventing me from embracing the differences that made me unique.

As I transitioned into high school, this controlled environment persisted, further embedding me in a cycle of conformity. It wasn’t until I reached the age of 25 that a light bulb flickered on, illuminating a path toward self-awareness and genuine inquiry. It was during this period of awakening that I began to question the identities that had been thrust upon me. Who am I, really? For so long, I had lived under the weight of expectations, embodying the identities handed to me without truly knowing my own.

Now, 16 years into this journey of learning, I recognize that freedom is found in shedding the identities that no longer serve me. I remember the fear that clouded my relationships, particularly regarding my sexuality. However, I experienced a profound moment when I felt God speak to me, affirming that I was chosen. This divine reassurance was transformative, allowing me to embrace my identity with laughter and joy. Today, I proudly declare, “I’m the gay Auntie who knows the Lord.” This statement embodies my acceptance of both my faith and my sexuality, merging them into a celebration of who I am? I Am Freedom.

Reflecting on my life and the lives of those around me, I realize that the narratives imposed on us are often limited and constraining. I have witnessed the glory of God in my life, rising to occasions that once seemed insurmountable. My faith has become a cornerstone of my identity, reinforcing the belief that the divine resides within me, as it does in everyone.

I refuse to allow anyone or anything to impose identities upon me that do not resonate with my true self. I am free to be me. I am free to love openly, and I am liberated from the chains, cycles, and bondage that were created to keep me from shining. This journey towards self-discovery has been both challenging and rewarding, illuminating the path towards authenticity and joy. I have learned that by embracing who I truly am, I can inspire others to embark on their own journeys of self-exploration and acceptance.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say One kind thing to my younger self it would be “Freedom is on the other side of fear Kelly” don’t be afraid to think differently than others and don’t dim your light for no one.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?

The public version of myself is indeed a reflection of who I am in private. I feel no need for external validation regarding my authenticity; I have embraced more of my true self. My nature is one of keen observation and a calm demeanor, traits that define both my personal and public life. The work I produce and the way I interact with the world around me embody this truth.

I consistently strive to bring my genuine self into every aspect of my life, whether in private conversations or public engagements. This alignment between my inner and outer selves allows me to live authentically, fostering deeper connections with those around me. Ultimately, the essence of who I am is evident in my actions and the impact I have on others, reinforcing the idea that the real me is consistently present, regardless of the setting.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I want my legacy to be one of unwavering tenacity and perseverance, demonstrating that every individual has the power to instigate change in the world. I believe that true transformation begins with knowledge of self and self-awareness, and I hope to inspire others to recognize the beauty of life and the potential that lies within them. My aspiration is for people to remember me as someone who taught them how to seek their true selves, heal from past wounds, and unlearn harmful patterns in order to rediscover their true purpose.

I envision a narrative where each encounter I had was a meaningful lesson, shared with wise souls who helped me illustrate the power of genuine transformation. Even when my truth was unpopular, I remained honest and raw, believing that authenticity is vital. I want people to recall my unmatched energy and the love and inspiration I offered, which I hope resonated deeply and encouraged others to embrace their own journeys of self-discovery. To always remember Kelly Joy Brown was truly The Interruption.
