Story & Lesson Highlights with Jonnie Morris of Detroit

Jonnie Morris shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Jonnie, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Meditation, silence and breath work until I reach the highest level of gratitude in that moment.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure. My name is Jonnie Morris, and I’m a Rapper, Singer and Songwriter from Detroit, Michigan. Specializing in hooks and authenticity, my brand reflects the many candors of love, loss, grief, pain, Joy and Excitement. I’ve been at it for almost 10 years now, and thus far have released 3 projects. My debut was an EP titled “It’s Beautiful And All Good” to which I celebrated the birth of my son, followed by my next EP titled “Jonnie, Be Good” which successfully introduced my signature sound to the world. I am currently preparing to release my lastest EP as we speak.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Easy. That I wasn’t enough. Growing up, I was bullied for my lack of designer clothes and shoes, and picked on relentlessly for my lip, being born with a cleft palate. It was surgically repaired at birth, but the scar left it noticeably different than your average set of lips, and the kids in school made sure I knew it. With time, love from family, and resilience from God, the understanding that I am worthy and capable of anything I put my mind to came naturally.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Great question. It showed me who’s truly by my side when I have nothing and can offer no one anything, and that was undoubtedly my family, easy. To never take family for granted, and those that truly love you at your worst in general.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely, Jonnie Morris is Jonnie Morris on and off the court, but God and life itself taught me how to wear each hat according to how I’m called to show up in that moment, and not just Jonnie Morris the rapper at all times. When I’m with my son, my dad hat is on. My Family, humble laid back Jonnie hat is on. And to the woman in my future, her man who gives his undivided attention and true love hat is on as well.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I never gave up, simple. Easy. To never let the illusion of time or other people’s expectations of you dictate when you should make it. That I was patient above it all.
