Jason, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Standing next to my wife Amanda Fylan on a warm September night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, amongst 85,000 other fans as Oasis broke into the opening chords of “Hello.”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Amanda and I are Doomsday Shelter Comedy for Mental Health: a comedy company and mental health advocacy organization based in our hometown of Oxford, Michigan. We have a saying at Doomsday Shelter Comedy: laughter isn’t just the best medicine; it is the antidote to despair and a lifeline to the lost.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Pettiness, pride, and distance break bonds between people.
Comedy and tragedy restore them.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Disappearing into worlds I created for myself, such as the stories I would write for hours each day; or worlds that were created for me, such as the stories I found in books and comic books.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
The existence of a higher celestial overseer, power, God, etc. The fact that no one can definitively prove such an existence is one of the primary reasons I believe in it. Such a power would so completely transcend scientific theory and detection as to be incomprehensible to the human mind.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Sitting at my kitchen table watching my two beloved cats watch the squirrels and chipmunks run around our backyard.
