We recently had the chance to connect with Dommique Diamond and have shared our conversation below.
Dommique, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
That is a great question when I’m not working or when I’m not in school, the first 90 minutes of my day is consistently thinking about what the future will bring me and pretty much was next. With me in school working and also creating a new project or two I’ve been thinking about what next for Dommique and what does that look like so whenever I have a chance to just not do anything for the beginning of the day I constantly think about what is next.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
So I’m a Detroit base model. I’ve been published eight times and counting. I’m also a communication communications major so after retired from modeling fully, I would love to work further in the media world. It’s always had an interest to me since I was a little girl so that’s the ultimate dream right there and that’s where I want my brand to be within the media world.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Well back then when I was in middle school and in high school to be honest, I feel like I always had an interest in modeling and also being a creative. Because at that time when I was in middle school and in high school I didn’t think it was possible because for one I am 5’2 for starters and I just didn’t see models that looked like me and that were the size of me but now since I’m in the space and I’m existing in it, I no longer believe that it was no space for me to be honest. I could’ve been doing this 10 years ago if I would’ve believed that I could, despite not seeing that much representation in the city.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I was gonna break last year, I honestly thought about quitting being a creative. I feel like I’ve done enough in the industry for my liking, and I just wanted to throw the towel plus at that time, I was going back to school so I didn’t know how that was gonna work with going to work going to school and trying to create projects. But my parents always taught me to never give up on anything that you love so I decided not to listen to myself and to keep on until I actually decide that I’m actually done.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, it is, from when I was a little girl, I’ve always been taught the true meaning of being yourself no matter what. So with the public sees that is my true self, even with me being in the modeling industry for four years it’s never changed me at all of course there are certain things that you do change as you grow overtime but the true essence of myself that’s never change. I’m still the funny, witty, and the curious person that I was years ago.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I honestly feel most at peace is when I’m with my community. And what I mean by community I mean I’m just around people that love me the most and I love them so being around my family being around my friends just being around the people that know me the best gives me the most amazing feeling in the world. it gives me a feeling that the industry can’t and that’s genuine love. And to be honest, that’s actually my favorite part of being a creative with me is when it’s time to go back into my cocoon. I know that I’m going back to a place where it’s full of peace and it’s full of love.
