Rising Stars: Meet The Grind Line Podcast

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Grind Line Podcast.

We have the guys from The Grind Line Podcast! Can you kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story?
We started the podcast when the Red Wings started missing the playoffs, so about 5 years ago now? Which is crazy to us. The podcast started out as part of a blog called The Winged Octopus but when the blog lost writers and shut down, we wanted to keep the podcast going so we rebranded to the Grind Line Podcast. We are just 3 guys who have a huge passion for Red Wings hockey, really hockey in general, and Detroit sports. Since we started the podcast, we have formed some great relationships with hockey media people, prospect experts, former players, and a ton of people on Twitter that we consider our family. Without them, we wouldn’t have gotten as far as we have.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the beginning, we had changed some members so it took a while for the show to kind of jell. I (Greg) am the producer and it took a bit to really understand the best methods for editing, posting, and getting our name out there. But overall, we just focus on having fun because there is really never a lack of content. If we are having fun with it then it becomes a passion, not a struggle.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What’s cool is this is a hobby for us. We would absolutely love to make this podcast into a career where we could quit our day jobs but since we are just a small section of coverage in a larger sports field, getting the big money sponsors and hundreds of thousands of listeners is a bit of a stretch. So, the three of us all have actual jobs where we need to talk to people who aren’t each other, unfortunately. I think one of the things that defines us, especially online, is our responsiveness. A lot of other content creators don’t interact with their listeners. We make it a point to include other fans and talk with them as much as possible because, at the end of the day, we all love the team and the sport.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
We love when random people say they have heard about us. Sometimes you feel like your operation is so small. I have worn our t-shirt when I’m out and about and have had people tell me they listen which is awesome. We also love the interaction with the community. The Red Wings have the most passionate fanbase in all of hockey and to get to share a space with other people that love the team as much as we do is what keeps us doing what we are doing.
