Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor McCowin.
Hi Taylor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Taylor and I’m an ordinary black girl from Detroit. I grew up knowing that I wanted to be my own boss, however, I was encouraged to go the coorperate route. After graduating and securing a cooperate career, I was found myself surrounded by many black Young black entrepreneurs. I knew that I had to find my niche in the world and find it fast. I bartend my grandmother’s birthday party in my backyard and I fell in love with bartending ever since. I went to a bartending school since I knew nothing about the art of bartending. Once I graduated, I started my own business Sipping with Tay.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Whew! I’ve had many obstacles/challenges. Finding out what licenses I needed to operate my business in the state of Michigan was an obstacle. Being that I serve liqour I knew that I would need, a permit/license and insurance. There isn’t that much information in the internet so I had to ask other mobile bartenders and call the state of Michigan. It was so much but we finally got the job done.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
A lot of people think Sipping with Tay is just a business. It’s not. Sipping with Tay is an art. Cocktail art. I have a creative studio where I can go to focus on my cocktails. Rather it’s a content video or a party that I’m getting ready for, I really put a lot of time and energy into it. The type of drink, the color I want it to be, the glass I want to use, even the shape of ice goes into my craft. I’m an artist.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor is a challenge. Honestly, I still don’t have a mentor. One person that I would love to be my mentor is in ATLANTA and Florida. I don’t know how that would work since I’m in Detroit. However, it does not hurt to ask! If someone inspires you, reach out to them in their DMs on Instagram, or find out their email! Let them know that you love their work, you’re inspired, and your intentions. It takes a lot of courage and I believe that’s why I didn’t do it yet.
