Today we’d like to introduce you to Stefani Flack.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve been drawn to creative careers my whole life and making beautiful things that inspire people or bring them joy. In the past, I’ve worked in the film industry and event planning, but playing with flowers has always been something I’ve been drawn to. How receiving them can instantly brighten someone’s day, or how they can warm up any home. People might not see flowers and bouquets and think of it as a creative activity, but your unique personality shows through every time you make a bouquet.
When I first got the idea to start a flower business in 2017, I was working freelance in the film industry and was finding too much time between gigs. I started creating bouquets at home for friends’ and acquaintances’ weddings, showers, and events. I loved being able to make custom bouquets and arrangements that matched each of their personalities and style. I ended up moving to New Orleans for film, so I put the floral business on hold, but when I made my way back to Michigan in 2021; I was ready to give it my all.
I had been researching and seeking out ways to deliver a flower shop without the actual shop. I found the most perfect vintage 1960s camper online and bought it the next day. My dad and I took the summer to fix it up, and in Spring of 2022, Bundle & Bunch made its debut on Mother’s Day at Drifter Coffee in Ferndale.
I find traditional florist shops seem overwhelming whether they are too fancy or they are a little outdated and almost confusing. My idea was just to make getting flowers more approachable, interactive, and fun. I wanted everyone to have a choice in every flower they got.
We have a “Build Your Own Bouquet” bar, priced per stem, where you can create a bundle of any size and pair different florals and accessories to make their own unique bouquet. This has turned into a fun activity to create a custom bouquet. The Build Your Own Bouquet bar offers 10-12 different flowers to choose from, and every person can make a unique combination, and all of them are beautiful in their own way. We also have pre-made bouquets and dried flowers for the people who simply want a nice bouquet to give or have in their home.
People have started to recognize the camper, and I now have a few loyal customers that come to all my events. Also, not to forget my very adorable mascot, Billy Buttons, who dresses up for every holiday as well. I hope one day to have a storefront, but for now, popping up around town with the camper has been very fulfilling.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think with every new business, the first few years are all about learning what works and what doesn’t, and you can use that as an opportunity to refine your business or let it overwhelm you. I knew not every pop-up would be successful, so it can sometimes be a struggle to know how many flowers to bring to an event. I’ve also been able to take the flowers I don’t sell, dry them, and turn them into dried bouquets sold in vases or ornaments and wreaths we sold at our holiday pop-up in December. It’s a great, sustainable way to repurpose the florals and is another unique offering people wouldn’t find anywhere else.
Overall, I think it has been a relatively smooth road and a pretty successful first year. I’m excited to see how else I can refine Bundle & Bunch into a brand and also a fun event and find ways to encourage more people to start having bouquets just because instead of just on big holidays. Flowers are for everybody, and we want people to see how they make bouquets that fit their personality and allow them to bring more creativity into their lives.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Both the Bundle & Bunch camper and Build Your Own Bouquet bar are available for event bookings! We’ve booked baby and wedding showers, birthdays, and corporate events. It’s a truly unique and fun experience that lets guests of all ages show their creativity and create a personalized bouquet they can take home with them. We also do event florals for weddings, showers, and events!
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I get most of my inspiration from other florist Instagram’s both local and global. “Flowermoxie” is very instructional and has taught me many tips and tricks of the trade. There’s some basic design techniques you can learn, but flower arranging can be just a lot of practice and experimenting. There’s a lot of traditional florists out there who would not agree, but most of my florist and vendor friends are self-taught.
