Rising Stars: Meet Seth Izzard of Downtown Ionia, MI

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Izzard.

Hi Seth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
in a nutshell, until I was 18 years old, I had never been to a Barber in my life, and had never cut a single head of hair! At 19, I decided to attend the Lansing Barber College, and after graduating in 2009, I opened my own one chair Barbershop, in a little hole in the wall strip mall on the outskirts of Ionia, called Izzy’z Barbershop. 15 years later, after a incredible journey, I now own a 4 chair Barbershop featuring some incredible barbers, in downtown Ionia, Michigan and am currently developing my own Barber School.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey as a barber, shop owner, instructor, and hopeful barber school owner, has faced so much adversity. Things like self doubt, financial troubles, crooked landlords, finding the right team, and about a billion different other struggles have made the story to get where I’m at now much more interesting to read.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Im essentially all 3, a Artist, a Business, and a Professional. As a Barber I’m constantly chasing down new ways to turn heads of hair into walking pieces of art. As an owner of a barbershop for 15 years, I know first hand the struggles of having to prioritize your needs while deciding what to sacrifice. As an educator of Barbering I have worked in class room settings to help students find their path and place as future professional barbers.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have had my fair share of both in my years as a Barber. I like to think tho, putting good out brings good in. So I’m constantly trying to leave the world a better place and oddly enough I think the world has sent me beyond my fair share of good luck back because of it. andddd I’ll take every bit of it!
