Today we’d like to introduce you to Salena Taylor.
Hi Salena, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Partial to Girls in 2019 on a piece of scrap paper. I had no money and no experience but I had an imagination, a dream and a creative thought pattern that I could actually bring change in these areas. . I wanted to help Mothers and their Children to find a way to cope through poverty. I started this Nonprofit from my own lived experience of troubles in my own life. I started a Basic Needs Program, Baby Program, Hair Program and Birthday Program to help families in my community. I started these programs due to my own trauma in each of these situations. I’ve been able to help hundreds of people with their day to day needs because of these programs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Anything worth having is going to take hard work and perseverance. My biggest struggles along the way has been changing peoples mindsets, funding issues and community division. While these are all problematic things I have not let any of them stop me from performing my mission.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in taking care of families. Being a resource within my community for those who need it the most. Creating programs that help transform peoples lives and their immediate situation. If you’re low on funds and can’t celebrate your child’s Birthday. Reach out to me in Partial to Girls and I’ll make sure your child is celebrated. These are just some of the things I’ve been able to accomplish with my work. One of my biggest highlights since operating is being on the Kelly and Ryan Show live for being spotlighted as a Community Hero for my work during Covid.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We’re currently about to transform a former School into a Community Center. This is with a partnership with Residents in Action. Another powerful Nonprofit in our city.
