Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Kay.
Hi Ruby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. My parents decided to move into this area when I was about 13-14. Growing up, they often taught me how to be myself and don’t worry about impressing anyone. Oftentimes, while being a teenager, I was getting fed these images of what beauty is and what I should dress like. Let’s be honest though, we all wanted the high school popularity and the jock boys falling over us at one point of time, right? Unfortunately, I got the wrong kind of popularity. High school was one of the worse periods, yet best in my life. Reason being is I was always wearing my hair in its natural state (curly, puffballs, afro, etc.) with sweatpants and hoodies. I was taught that school was not a runway, but a learning ground. Although the other kids had thought Wyoming High School was New York Fashion Week. Nonetheless, I began to receive hateful messages, threats, and even girls riding the same bus as me just to fight me. Without any help from the school and legal systems, sadly, I began contemplating suicide and self-harm because of these tragic incidents. I literally had no friends, and it was just me. My confidence that was once so high was crumbling before my eyes.
Within the next few weeks, I took it upon myself to do my hair and a few quite girls at school. I have had a passion for hair since I was 4. When I was finished, some girls would cheer and rejoice about how much they loved their hair and the fact they didn’t think they would look so good. Some women have even cried tears of joy because they have never had their hair done or have felt prettier. This was the moment that I knew this is what I wanted to do. This is when I knew that I can give someone else a wonderful feeling of feeling confident, beautiful, fearless, and unstoppable.
Once I graduated high school, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, cosmetology. I started and graduated in 2014. I received my license 12/26, one of my favorite Christmas gifts. Since doing hair in the bathrooms of the high school and in others’ salon, I have been blessed enough to open my own personal salon and wig boutique catering to Womens’ needs!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, I feel like nothing in life will be a smooth road, you know? Has it been smooth? absolutely not. Has it been worth it? oh absolutely yes.
I can say one of my biggest struggles is reminding myself that I am only one person. It’s like I have an energizer bunny inside that wants to do everything. I have to remind myself it is okay that I can’t fit everything in as soon as I’d like to or even get certain orders out as fast. Some things are out of our control. Us entrepreneurs cannot be so hard on ourselves when trying to please everyone.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed hairstylist that specializes in natural hair care and virgin hair extension services. I have been licensed since 2014 and have been working for Konfident Kay Hair Salon since I have been licensed. My services are known to promote natural hair growth and health. I custom make handmade virgin hair wig units as well as machine make custom human hair wig units. All of our products and service information can be found right at www.konfidentkay.com.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am very goofy, sweet, and genuine. I have had people tell me they are nothing like they thought I would be because most “pretty girls” or people who “have it together” come off stuck up. I just let them know of course no one has it completely together, but I will always be here for a smile and laugh because we all need somebody.
