Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosa María Zamarrón.
Rosa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in Southwest Detroit, attended Cass Tech in High School. I moved away for college for a few years and when I came back, I had the dream of establishing a space here one day. In 2018 with the help of Inside Southwest and Erik Paul Howard I was able to open a studio with Gabby Baginski and Alexa Borromeo called La Sirena Studio. I’ve continued to work in my own photography practice through the years and establish some amazing connections.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The pandemic definitely made it a bit difficult, but I’ve been working on ways to move ahead.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a documentary photographer. I love hearing people’s stories and documenting them. I’ve been working a lot with the Anishinaabek in Michigan as well as other indigenous people for many of my projects. It’s some of the best times because I’ve learned so much and received many teachings that have helped me grow as a person personally. I’ve also worked on telling the stories of many people in Detroit especially as a form of archiving because many of the strangers I meet have important history to tell about the very city we live in.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
To keep moving forward. There will be highs and lows but having a goal in mind, even if that changes slightly, makes it easier to keep trying to reach it even when we hit bumps.
