Rising Stars: Meet Rocky Rains

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocky Rains.

Rocky Rains

Hi Rocky, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been able to see and hear spirits. This, I found out, runs in my family. My Great Granny on my dad’s side was considered a “Wise Woman.” When I was a child, our visits to her home on a mountainside in rural Kentucky were full of wonder and magic, like a Faery Tale. She would take us for “nature walks” on the mountain, teaching us about the plants and animals we would encounter. She would often show us her small horde of found treasures filled with Lightening Stones (fulgurites), a hag stone found on a stream bank, and her most prized possession, a four-leaf clover she kept pressed between the pages of her bible. And then there was my Granny Lucy, my mom’s mom. This woman prayed my uncle back to life. The doctors had pronounced him brain dead and wanted to pull the plug (if I remember correctly, he had been in this state for over a week), but she convinced them to wait one more day; she then made her way to the hospital chapel and hit her knees praying. Early the next morning a nurse came running into the chapel and excitedly told her that her son was awake, lucid and in good shape, appearing to have made a complete recovery much to the astonishment of the doctors. My uncle went on to live another fourteen years.

My Granny Lucy was from Alabama, and she kept a jar filled with Alabama red dirt beneath her bed. Her house was spectacularly haunted. Phantom music could be heard coming from the attic as well as footsteps. On several different occasions, she had clergy over to bless the house, it would quiet for a while, but then activity would start back up. I even witnessed a small child’s toy phone start ringing of its own volition. And then it all stopped. We asked what she had done to put an end to it, and she replied that she had mopped the floors with something she called “tar water” and with a grin on her face, let us smell a bottle of Creolina.

These two women were instrumental in my upbringing and helped shape me into the man I became.

I had been born with the ability to see and hear spirits, but for my family, thank goodness, this was not something that was seen as strange. My mother was given to visions and spiritual visitations, as were her mother and siblings. She had The Gift of Prophesy, one of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost.

I was taken to Pentecostal churches on Sundays and attended Catholic schools during the week, and at home would listen to my mom discuss a dream that my aunt had about seeing a dead relative and the message she had received. Little did I know that this was all in preparation for the spiritual work that I would take up later in life.

I was 14 when the shadow beings started to attack me while I was asleep. My brother and I shared a room, and we had bunk beds, he had the top bunk and I the lower. I cannot remember exactly when it started, but I began to have night terrors of something dropping on me from above. I would scream and literally kick the top bunk off with my brother still sleeping. This went on for quite some time, my mom would run into the room and pray over me and the room but every night the same thing would happen all over again. Then it escalated, as I was falling asleep, I would see a solid black shape emerge from the closet and stand there waiting for me to doze off and no matter how hard I tried to stay awake, I simply was not able to. My mother brought in clergy to bless the house and pray over me, but this did not help at all. Finally, in a fit of desperation, I began to shout out to the heavens for help. I remember it was not directed to the Christian God or to any deity in particular. I needed help, and I did not care where it came from. This is when I received what I was later to call a spiritual download for the first time. A peculiar feeling came over me, and I felt lead to grab the family bible. (A huge white leatherette volume with golden gilt-edged pages. My mother was especially proud of it.) I opened the book at random to Psalms 91. I grabbed a notebook and pencil and copied the Psalm. I then turned to the end pages of the bible; these were covered in a multitude of religious symbols. Much to my astonishment, one of the symbols was actually glowing on the page. I drew this symbol on the same paper as the 91st Psalm. I took this into the bedroom and knowing exactly what I would find, went to the closet, and took all the clothes from the hanging bar. The bar was removable. I pulled the bar out and, in the slot where it rested, I placed the piece of paper with the symbol and 91st Psalm. I then replaced the bar and clothes. That night nothing happened. I had made my start at becoming a Cunning man. Some years later I found out the meaning of the symbol, it was the Chi Rho but with 2 keys as the cross bars. These were the keys to the kingdom, the keys of Loosing and Binding, and the 91st Psalm a prayer of protection. From this point on I was led in spirit to different teachers in several different spiritual disciplines. To this day, I am still a spiritual student.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anything worth doing is never easy. There are always ups and downs, as the best instructor is experience. Perhaps the hardest thing I had to learn was to trust my inner voice and quit second-guessing myself.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a Cunning Man, a Folk magician, in service to the Divine Mystery. My specialty is in spiritual protection and mediation between the human realms and the spiritual realms. I believe this stems from those incidents that occurred in my childhood. Art informs all the work that I do, I love the crafting aspect of the Craft.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m a closet 3 Stooges fanatic, lol!
