Rising Stars: Meet Rick Tasch of Drummond Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Tasch.

Hi Rick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I live on the Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, In the year 2000, I built a log home on Drummond Island, on the shores of Lake Huron. In 2001, I decided to rent it out as a deluxe vacation rental home. It has proven to be very popular, with renters from 26 states staying there so far. Also, one group from Germany. I’ve had a total of about 450 rentals to date. Families, couples, friends, honeymooners all making great memories at my log home on Drummond Island.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Rental numbers had been consistent, though not great. The big change came with Covid. Rentals increased significantly during Covid, adding June, September and October as prime months, along with July and August. Rentals have dropped since then, but are still much better than pre-Covid.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I put a lot of money back into that rental home, and it looks as good today as when it was built, but with a lot more amenities. Last year, for example, I added a circular driveway, with more room, and also added AC. I believe I’m known as being a caring host. Airbnb usually has me listed as a “Super Host”.
I had worked in non-profit for many years, and then as a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep. for Bristol-Myers Squibb for many more years. I now operate the rental, and also Officiate destination weddings in the warmer weather.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I got to know Drummond Island only because I called on two doctor offices there, as a Pharma Rep. The rental business wouldn’t have happened without the Pharma job. I was fortunate to find a wonderful parcel to buy and to build on. All of that led to hundreds of families creating great memories at that log home. I certainly enjoy going there as well.
