Rising Stars: Meet Rachel Smalley of Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Smalley.

Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Smalley Social was built from my passion for creating content that not only looks good but also drives real results. With a background in Communication Design from the College for Creative Studies and professional experience managing social media for nationally recognized brands, I saw firsthand how powerful authentic storytelling and strategic content can be.

After five years of working in the social media industry, I founded Smalley Social in 2024 to help businesses and personal brands grow their online presence through creative strategy, short-form video, photography, and social media management. My approach combines data-driven marketing with high-quality, engaging content that connects with audiences, builds lasting brand loyalty, and delivers measurable results.

Today, I continue to grow my own social media platforms while partnering with brands and fellow creators to produce engaging, high-performing content. My experience spans every facet of social media—from strategy and content creation to photography, videography, community management, influencer marketing, paid advertising, and analytics.

Through Smalley Social, I help businesses develop customized content strategies, create scroll-stopping visuals, and execute social media campaigns that elevate their brand and connect with their target audience. My goal is simple: to help brands tell their story in a way that feels authentic, memorable, and drives meaningful growth.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building Smalley Social while working full-time was one of my biggest challenges, requiring countless nights and weekends to grow the business. The constantly changing social media landscape has also pushed me to continuously adapt, learn, and stay ahead of industry trends. Those challenges have made me a stronger strategist, creator, and business owner.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a creative, I specialize in visual storytelling through social media strategy, photography, videography, and digital content creation. My work focuses on helping brands and individuals develop a strong identity by creating content that feels authentic, engaging, and aligned with their goals.

I’m known for combining strong visual aesthetics with data-driven insights to create content that not only looks good but also performs.

I am most proud of my ability to turn ideas into meaningful stories that connect with audiences. What sets me apart is my hands-on approach—I don’t just create templated AI content; I understand the strategy, audience, trends, and analytics behind what makes content successful.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I haven’t had a formal mentor throughout my journey. I have been largely self-taught through hands-on experience, continuous learning, and adapting to the ever-changing social media industry. My biggest advice is to network intentionally, build genuine relationships, and learn from those around you. Every social experience I have is an opportunity to connect, grow my network, and create new opportunities for Smalley Social and myself as a creator.
