Rising Stars: Meet Peter VanSprange of Grand Rapids, Michigan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter VanSprange

Hi Peter, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started writing and having an interest in music from a young age. In my mid teens I started writing short stories and poems, which began peaking my interest in the idea of songwriting. I didn’t have a thought of how to procure melodies back then.

When I was twenty-one I revisited the idea of songwriting when my cousin heard me sing a duet with my sister at my eldest brothers wedding. He said we should start writing music. We started the next day.

Fast forward seven years and I met and worked with a few people, learning a lot.

Near the end of that chapter, my friend suggested I release a solo song so I could be on his upcoming album. That decision brought me to how I do music today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Choosing to do anything you love is almost never easy, so no. Trying to manage your direction in the industry of music and simply wanting to put out a song is two different things. Working with people and friends can be tricky, but if you are all equally invested (which is very difficult to find), it might possibly make things easier, and definitely worth while.

I think the struggle with wanting to be a creative in the world of music or art in general is not allowing yourself to get lost in ‘making it.’ Everyone wants to be their own success story. But people forget success isn’t given, it’s earned. There’s almost always someone who helped you along the way, unless you happen to be a savant at every facet of your craft. Then kudos.

So I say again, no, it’s not easy, but I can definitely say the journey is worth it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a vocalist and a songwriter. I have an ear for what I believe can make or break a song.

I specialize in singing and songwriting, particularly in terms of writing melodies and lyrics that will match specific genres. My latest album Colhart is an example of writing melodies based off the specific genre I hear for each song.

I’m grateful for my friends and other collaborators who helped bring these productions to life.

I’ve been blessed to work with some amazingly talented people within the music industry these past few years that have given both myself and my friends their services, and I’ve been learning a lot. I’m proud of collaborating with my friends and others who later became friends. It’s a great way to grow as a songwriter, musician, and building my own personal character.

I’m proud of writing and releasing two albums in the past two years, over thirty songs in total, including singles and other collaborations. Something that sets me apart from others would be my willingness and intention to push myself into genres of music I personally never thought myself doing. If I have an idea for a country song, I do my best to act upon that idea, even if my first instinct is to say, “I don’t even listen to country music. Why would I write a country song?” Now I’ve written several.

How do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t use the word luck per say. I believe that timing and work ethic is critical. There’s always a window of opportunity, and I’m grateful for moments that have been presented to both myself and my friends. It’s one thing to sit and wait patiently for luck or fate to bring you to your destination, but it’s another thing to attempt to create your own vision and remain focused on doing what you know you can do. There’s a healthy balance between a continued work ethic and enjoying the journey along the way. But if luck has brought me anything, it’s taught me to seize the moment.
