Rising Stars: Meet Monika Budniak Wischmann of Grosse Pointe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monika Budniak Wischmann.

Hi Monika, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my career in architecture shortly after graduating with a degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from the Poznań University of Technology. With a fresh diploma in hand and a sense of adventure, I moved to Shanghai to join the British firm Chapman Taylor. That first step launched me into a global journey that has shaped both my professional path and personal outlook.

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to live and work across three continents—Europe, Asia, and North America—experiencing a rich variety of architectural styles and cultural perspectives. Each place has taught me something new and deepened my belief in the importance of embracing and respecting different cultures. I’m driven by curiosity and a desire to create spaces that are thoughtful, sustainable, and responsive to their context.

Over the years, I’ve worked with international firms, including the Italian practice DL Interior Design in Shanghai. Today, I run my own studio based in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, where I continue to explore how interior design can be both environmentally conscious and deeply human.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. The path was bumpy—filled with challenges that, in hindsight, have made me stronger and more intentional in my work.

Being a foreigner is not always easy, but being a foreign entrepreneur and business owner can be even more challenging.
Ultimately, that discomfort became a catalyst. It pushed me to build something of my own—my own studio, based in Grosse Pointe. A space where I can celebrate my story and infuse my international mindset into every design. Most of my clients were, and still are, international. That comes naturally, as I’ve always felt most at home in diverse, multicultural environments.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Thank you for asking! I have a strong understanding and intuitive feeling for space that helps me bring projects to life efficiently and thoughtfully. My approach to interior design leans toward the artistic—I believe spaces should not only function well but also leave a lasting impression. I’m passionate about the small details that people remember and connect with emotionally.

What truly sets my work apart is how I weave together diverse cultural influences. From China, I draw inspiration from Feng Shui to create harmonious and balanced environments. Mexico inspires my use of vibrant color and texture, while Poland influences my focus on ergonomics and human-centered design. Living and working in the U.S. has deepened my commitment to sustainability, which I integrate into every project.

Ultimately, I strive to design spaces that feel both beautiful and meaningful, where every element serves a purpose and tells a story.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I believe the spaces we surround ourselves with should make us feel good. That’s why design isn’t solely about the designer’s vision or artistic expression—it’s about creating a deeply personal and meaningful connection between the space and its owner. Ultimately, it should reflect their story, values, and sense of belonging. I hope that my clients can feel that.
