Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Dekok
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up deeply appreciating food, mainly baked goods. My mom prioritized baking chocolate chip cookies weekly and a coffeecake on the weekends. She liked to make cute cheese plates with the cheese cut into shapes with seasonal cookie cutters and was a great hostess. So as I got older, and my parents moved hours away from Detroit (Minnesota! Furthest corner!) I realized that I still wanted these cute things and needed to learn to make them myself. I’d call my mom for tips and it’s cute how eventually she’d call me for baking/cooking tips and now my dad does.
I worked at Hour Magazine right out of college in the ad design department and simultaneously started a food blog making recipes I grew up eating or every version of whatever was my thing at the moment: ice cream, strawberry shortcake, waffles etc and would food style things for work as needed. The staff was small so we all wore many hats. Eventually my blog was noticed by a local ad agency that hired me to work on food brands for them. Eventually I moved on to be the Creative Director at Bon Bon Bon and now I am freelance working for hospitality brands, Norm’s Diner, and also not food related: arts and scraps here in detroit.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road but every situation has just reinforced the reminder that I can trust myself and have confidence in myself to handle it! It can be nerve-wracking to be your own boss, find clients, etc, but the truth is nobody can do exactly what you do. Own that!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Last year I started my own personal project called Megazine. I’m putting out a lil recipe zine twice a year until I feel it’s run its course. It’s a collection of recipes that I grew up with/that my mom made as a tribute to her. I ship them out and sell them locally here in Detroit at Norm’s Diner, Vesper Books & Wine, Tall Trees Cafe and Drifter Coffee. It’s been an amazing way to pivot my work in the food world re my blog in a new fresh way. Working with photographer Rebecca Siminov has been incredible! Her style is so good and working with her has really brought this project to life.
