Today we’d like to introduce you to Makida Coulter.
Hi Makida, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for fashion/beauty started at a very young age. My mother, who is beautiful inside and out, was always dressed to the nine – from hair, outfit to accessories. Her look was never complete without accessories, including jewelry, and she put just as much time into finding the right jewelry pieces as she did the outfit. I learned how you could transform a basic outfit into a gorgeous look by just adding beautiful jewelry pieces. My love for jewelry/accessories grew from there.
Because of my love for fashion and the beauty industry, I always wanted to own my own boutique where I could offer beautiful, chic, trendy, and affordable pieces that would make anyone feel fabulous!
This desire birthed J’ME, House of Posh on September 30, 2020.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anything worth having is hard work. It is not easy being a business owner, but it is worth it. Being a small business owner requires a lot of juggling and a lot of your time. In some cases (my situation to an extent) you’re a one-man show where you are doing everything from inventory, sales and marketing, packaging, product discovery, ideas for growth, and building your brand.
If I were to elaborate on a specific challenge would be acquiring new customers. When you are a small business owner, having the resources to spend on marketing and advertising campaigns just aren’t there. With that being said, I had to learn how to promote on social media and try to learn the science behind it, which didn’t come natural for me – not my strong skill set. However, you do what you need to do as a small business owner to push forward.
In addition, I had to reach out to family/friends and ask for their help in promoting the business by posting on their social media platforms as well. This was very helpful as it got the business recognized by more customers.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a college graduate who holds an MBA. A lot of my career history has been in management. I’m currently in the financial industry – Lending Division. What I’m most proud of is that I can go into any organization/department and quickly pick up on ways to improve processes to make the department more efficient.
This professional skill set is helping me do the same with my business – to evaluate where there are deficiencies and to put processes in place to make running the business more efficient. Efficiency is key in running any business, but especially when you are a small business owner. You have to come up with ways to work smarter so that you do not ware yourself down (especially if you are a one-man show) until you can get your business to a place where you can hire employees.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Happiness to me is having peace, financial freedom, being healthy, my family prospering, achieving personal goals, seeing my kids smile, Fall, Christmas lights, design, and fashion.
I do feel happiness is intentional, and strive to be every day!!!
