Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Wallace.
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in Northern Michigan participating in competitive yearbook….nerdy, I know, but that is where I was introduced to and fell in love with Graphic Design. I decided to make the big move to Detroit to attend the College for Creative Studies and fell in love with the city. I was lucky enough to have my first job experience be at a big agency working on large clients like Sports Authority, Ford, and the like. I then moved to a small agency where I was able to work on a variety of clients and projects. That is where I found the joy in branding and packaging. Working closely on brands like Founders Brewing and McClure’s Pickles showed me how much fun you can have evolving an existing brand. I now own my own business where I get to work with passionate entrepreneurs to make sure their product or service shows up in the world in a powerful, meaningful and creative way. Oh, and I moved back to Northern Michigan earlier this year, this life has really come full circle.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been so lucky to work with amazing people in my career so far, both on the client side and colleagues too, that any of the struggles have always been remedied by the support of my community. I will say, owning your own business comes with its own struggles. Figuring out the balance of creativity vs. productivity, taxes? It can be a lot but also very rewarding.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have somehow been able to blend my two favorite things; food and design, into something I can do everyday. I specialize in branding and packaging mostly in the food and beverage space. I love the way packaging can feel like solving a puzzle. Making sure you have the mandatory elements like net wt, nutrition facts, in the right space and size but also making the package stand out on the shelf, be ownable and communicate the essence of the brand is a fun challenge. I love collaborating with a client to not only ensure their vision comes to life, but setting their brand apart and setting them up for future growth.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
After growing up in Northern Michigan, I would be a fool if my favorite memory didn’t involve water. I grew up across the street from a river and spent so many summer evenings swimming up current just to float back down. It felt so simple and soothing.
(The calming river memories were quickly replaced when winter came and I was riding a little mini snowmobile whose throttle got stuck and instead of hitting the kill switch, I just jumped off leaving the snowmobile flying right towards the river! Thank goodness for a telephone being in the way to stop it.)
Every spot has its good and bad memories right?
