Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexie Cerk.
Hi Lexie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I grew up exploring the trails and dunes encompassing the Great Lakes. A hike, a swim in Lake Michigan, and a bonfire on the beach are all the makings of a perfect day for me.
My story as a small business owner began in 2020. With additional time at home, I tried my hand at making candles for holiday gifts. My full-time job as a social media manager meant many hours in front of a screen. My hobby of candle making allowed for a more hands-on, creative outlet. I enjoyed it so much that my husband suggested I turn my love of creating into a business. To be honest, I was intimidated by the idea but knew I would have regrets if I didn’t give it a shot. With the encouragement of family and friends, I moved forward with candle testing and crafting nostalgic scents. Hand poured with the highest quality and care in Michigan’s Betsie Valley, Valley Goods was born.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
During my time as a small business owner, I have experienced several peaks and valleys. Some of these include shipping candles in hot summer months, increases in supply prices, and navigating outdoor craft shows (my tent blew away at one). Curveballs are thrown at us every day, but as my mom always says, it’s how you handle them that shows your true character.
Being in this position, I have gained an abundance of respect for the small businesses around me, especially those owned by women. It is inspiring to watch others pursue their passions and I have learned so much from them. It is a true testament to how hard work pays off. There has been a great deal of self-education, research, and trial and error, but I have enjoyed every minute. I have become a stronger, more independent version of myself because of it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Being a part of something bigger than myself is important to me and I wanted to extend that philosophy through Valley Goods. The National Parks have always held a special place in my heart, and I am proud to say Valley Goods shares the goodness by donating 5% of all sales to The National Park Foundation to protect and restore them.
Growing up near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore gave me an appreciation for our public lands. The National Parks have held many fond memories for my family and me. Such as spending my fifth wedding anniversary at Glacier in Montana, hiking the canyon at Zion in Utah, and exploring Olympic with friends in Washington.
My bucket list has always felt like this list of unrealistic goals I never thought I would be able to achieve but… I now have my own small business. Next up is sharing the goodness at all 63 National Parks!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
During my research on what type of candle I would like to make, I learned how unhealthy the average box-store candle can be. My goal was to make candles that are safe for customers as well as our environment. I made it a point to use all-natural soy wax, lead and zinc-free cotton wicks, and phthalate-free fragrance oils.
I have always loved how the smell of a candle can transport you to a different time or place. Valley Goods has a number of nostalgic scents to help reminisce on each memorable season in your life. Lake House for long weekends spent with loved ones by the lake. Mulled Cider for annual fall outings to the farmer’s market. White Pine, reminiscent of Frasier firs from the holiday tree farm.
Enjoy the goodness of Northern Michigan and beyond by ordering your very own candles for the cozy corners of your home today!
