Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra O’Guinn.
Hi Kyra , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a wife and mom of two, a real Detroit girlie. Born and bred from the westside of Detroit. I went to Cass and received my Bachelor’s from Wayne State. After receiving my Bachelor’s degree I spent 3 years post grad looking for a job in my career field of communications. I mean I was open to pretty much anything that has something to do marketing, Public Relations, media relations, basically anything in a creative space. After being disappointed and let down by job after job, after job, I decided to take matters into my own hands. For the past year, I have been devoted to my own journey in creating different forms of content, showing up in spaces that used to intimidate me, selling myself to anybody that’s willing to listen and taking big risks. It’s scary, but when I think about where I was compared to where I am now, I’d rather be scared than watching my life pass me by.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I actually graduated 36 weeks pregnant with my second child, newly married, and trying to keep everything together. When I first started at Wayne State, I lost my grandmother, the matriarch of our family. That loss completely broke me down. I didn’t think I would make it. Honestly, I wanted to drop out and come back “when I was ready.”
But God. If it wasn’t for my family, especially my cousin Mimi, my husband, and my faith, I don’t know if I would have seen it through.
Even after graduation, the challenges didn’t stop. I battled self-doubt, imposter syndrome, postpartum depression, and the adjustment to being both a newlywed and a mom of multiples. It felt like everything was stacked against me at once.
Still, I kept going. And looking at where I am now…thriving, building, and walking in everything I once prayed for. I know every setback was shaping me for this moment.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a media mogul in the making! I love all things media, marketing and public speaking. I come alive in creative spaces and I take any opportunity creatively that comes my way. I have only told close family and friends this, but I’m about to start my own social media agency! That’s so scary to say on paper or out loud because I always viewed myself as a creative but I never viewed myself as a business owner. To that end, I’m no longer keeping myself bound to who I thought I was. God has his own assignment for me.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Hmmm….. this is a good one because I like to think of myself as an open book. I guess I would want them to know that this version they see now, is the product of a lot of soul searching. A lot of inner work, being honest with myself, getting reconnected with my faith, and a little delusion. Ha.
