Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Evans.
Hi Kyle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Art is something that I always wanted to be a part of, but it took me a little while to figure out that tattooing was how I could do that. I started trying to pursue a career and education in art after high school but steadily drifted further from art and more into computers and tech. I quickly realized that getting a computer science degree was not going to be as fun as making MySpace layouts.
Around the same time, I got sad enough to leave school and I started getting tattooed fairly frequently. I quickly fell in love with it and tattooing just seemed like the perfect fit for me. The people in that shop where I was getting tattooed gave me the opportunity of an apprenticeship.
After learning to tattoo, building a clientele, and developing a style that I enjoyed working in, I was offered an opportunity to work in a private studio in Ferndale called futurelazertiger. It was like a dream working with all the talented artists there, and I always knew it would be the last tattoo studio I worked in unless I were to open my own spot.
Because futurelazertiger was such a great situation for me, I was in no hurry to leave once I got the bug to open my own business. So, I knew I wouldn’t leave unless I found something absolutely perfect.
Fast forward to early this year, the perfect spot presented itself to me, and I was able to open Nostromo Tattoo Studio. Nostromo is a private tattoo studio in Pontiac, Michigan – housing artists that strive to bring light, creativity, and absurdity into this industry. We are here to create a safe space for all types of people to get tattoos by artists that care.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In early 2021, the owner of futurelazertiger, and one of my best friends, Geary Morrill, passed away due to colorectal cancer. Having the honor of working alongside him in his studio before and after that is something I’ll cherish forever. The road of getting my own studio off the ground has been fairly smooth. The only real struggle of this new adventure was leaving the cozy roof of futurelazertiger and Geary’s family. I love them all so much.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The tattoos that I make are usually bright and colorful, but I enjoy blackwork tattooing as well. I am very inspired by pop culture, and I like to focus on surreal subject matter that usually lean on contrasting themes, concepts, and styles. I love making tattoos that represent music and movies, especially utilizing illustrative portraits.
I think those illustrative pop-culture portraits and my more sci-fi-inspired abstract work is where my work shines.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a weird emo kid that hyperfixated on cartoons, skateboarding, or whatever genre of music that happened to be my personality that week. If you walk around Nostromo Tattoo Studio, you’ll learn that not a lot has changed.
