Rising Stars: Meet Kristina Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Mitchell.

Hi Kristina, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for esthetics and the beauty industry! In my early 20s, I would do eyelash extensions for local clients as a hobby, and it became something I loved. During that time, I was in school for journalism, so the beauty industry was something I didn’t think I could take seriously at the moment.

Being a journalist around that time, I’d always make sure I looked my best, the best way I could! I always did my own makeup and stayed on top of the makeup trends as much as possible. Social media had evolved heavily (the start of what it is today) so I would watch vloggers and videos of hair extension installs, and DIY makeup looks, to get a better understanding of the type of audience I wanted to attract.

By late 2019, I had a plan to start beauty school, but COVID-19 had begun and it set my plans all the way back. But it was a catalyst to start my own business which was called at the time, Galactic Glam Hair & Beauty LLC. This was when I decided to take on the beauty/hair industry and did hair weave reviews, makeup tutorials, etc. I even started an Instagram live serious called ‘The midday beat with Krissy’ (I wish to get back to that soon!)

By the fall of 2020, I was able to begin beauty school, specializing in esthetics, learning waxing, professional makeup, facials, the beauty business, etc. That’s when I learned there was much more to the beauty industry than just hair and makeup, which shifted my focus and gave me a broader spectrum! I then had a clearer vision of what I wanted to do. I changed my name to ‘Galactic Esthetics, ’ providing services like facials, waxing, and makeup application. I graduated in March 2021, got my license in April, and got my own suite rental space to start my services as an entrepreneur. It’s been a joy ride ever since!

I attended the IESC Spa Conference in Las Vegas last year which inspired me to take it up and notch and find what my niche was, which is waxing. I applied for a job at European Wax as a professional waxer and was later terminated due to my having my own esthetics business. That motivated me even harder! I then came up with the idea that I wanted to go back to school to become a licensed instructor. In July of 2021, I held my first wax class at my suite building I rented in Southfield and the turnout was amazing!

After all the highs, I experienced a “low”. I found out I was pregnant with my first child in August, and I was so distraught. I wasn’t ready and I didn’t think I could ever be as successful as I wanted to be, right? You know, thinking the absolute worse. Fast forward to today, I’m a single mom with a healthy 2-month-old baby girl and I couldn’t imagine my life without her! Oh, and business is great! I started back services when she was only a month old, which was not intentionally planned at all. My second wax class is coming up Friday, August 12th at SVRC Marketplace in Saginaw, MI. I’m excited to share my story with an even bigger purpose, and I can’t wait!

My goal is to teach waxing all over Michigan, and hopefully out of state and at the IESC Spa Conference. I also hope to own my own chain of salons very soon! ‘Galactic Studios’ … yea I like the sound of that!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Adjusting to motherhood and still wanting to be successful. A part of me didn’t think it was possible, because of hearsay. By I’m still learning that there’s is no set time to have everything figured out. You really have to take a leap of faith and enjoy the ride.

I’m still figuring out what works best for me juggling single parenting and entrepreneurship. I don’t want to take any more “brakes,” so whatever I do, I have to plan strategically. Even making sure I have a solid support system etc. everything literally takes time and has to be well planned out. If not, I’ll crumble.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a licensed esthetician/instructor specializing in professional waxing. I’m proud of my continuing my education and my wanting to learn more about to field I’m in. You never stop learning in this industry. There’s always a constant need to know. Once a student, always a student. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to brand myself, but the end goal is to be able to brand my company/future salon even better.

What was you like growing up?
From what my family tells me, always bubbly! Lol, energetic and always ready to go lol
