Rising Stars: Meet Kendra Boos of Muskegon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Boos.

Hi Kendra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I worked at a high volume shelter and one day we had a dog come in that was pulled from a house by the police for animal neglect. I knew the owners as we had many issues with them over the years. This poor dog had sores all over, was emaciated, and was covered in filth. His name was Solo & I very quickly formed a bond with him. When a dog is pulled for neglect, they are considered evidence and have to stay at the shelter for the duration of the court case. Solo lived his entire life outdoor with his “owners” so coming to the shelter was extremely stressful for him. We decided to build him his own kennel outside and let him live outdoors until the court case was done. Taking care of an outdoor dog was so much work…way more work than I imagined it would be. Unfortunately, Solo was aggressive and was humanely euthanized at the end of the his court case. I created Operation Solo in memory of him.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have had our struggles and learning moments. Starting an organization was new to all of us so we definitely had a learning curve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Animal Control Officer. While the job is extremely hard, seeing the worst of the worst, it is so rewarding to take dogs in that have been essentially “thrown away,” and help find them good homes.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think that I have been extremely lucky to have a lot of people who support me and stand behind me with everything I do. Not everyone has a huge support system, but I do, and I am so lucky for that!
