Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Griffin.
Hi Jordyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
About 6 years ago my husband (then boyfriend) went off to Boot Camp, and I started making hand-lettered long-distance cards. There really wasn’t any cards for long-distance at the time, so my shop started to gain traction with others in the same boat as me.
As time went on, I started to branch out into birthday, Christmas, thank you cards & more.
Then in 2018, I decided to release some Vinyl Stickers… and that’s when everything changed! Ever since then my business has really picked up because people really love their stickers!
By 2019, I wanted to do something more meaningful with my business. Ever since I was little, I would always say, “I just want to be rich so I can give it all away to those in need!” And well, I’m not quite rich but I do have a Charity Collection that I’m so beyond proud of!
Certain stickers and cards in my shop donate to various causes, The Ocean Cleanup, Wildlife Conservation Network, National Forest Foundation, Equal Justice Initiative… to name a few. With the help of customers and retail stores across the country, we have helped donate over $5,000 to these causes.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a business is never smooth sailing! When I first started my business, I was still in college, so I’ve always had the issue of time management to deal with.
Because of the pandemic, when stores were closing all over, I truly thought this was the end for my business. I rely on wholesale orders and if stores can’t stay open then how am I going to survive this? I started focusing on digital products and other revenue streams — even got a full-time job that I still work at today!
Orders were non-existent for a while there, but then it picked up and I’ve had a steady stream of wholesale orders this entire year. Jordyn Alison Designs is now in 120+ retailers across the country!!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Mostly everything you see in my shop has been hand-lettered by myself… or I’m using a font that I’ve created from my lettering. My work is unique because it’s all from my own hands!
I’d say the biggest thing that sets me apart today is that I’m not running this business to become a millionaire… I’m running this business because I want to make a difference. I want my Charity Collection to donate as much as possible, even if that cuts into my profits because I truly care about the causes I support.
I want my cards and stickers to make other feel good about themselves, whether they’re buying it for them or giving it to a friend. I want to spread positivity and encouragement wherever I can!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I would say that if you are just starting out to really make sure you know your profit margins. Don’t step into wholesale if you can’t afford it. Look up SEO and get used to it from the beginning, because good SEO can improve your website so much!
If you get to a point where you don’t like what you sell anymore, then change it. Don’t worry about what others will think, because being authentic is most important!
