Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Cooper
Hi Jordan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since I was about 6 or 7, writing has always been one of the biggest aspects of my life and a means to self expression. When I was younger I attended a church school of which I participated in the kids choir. Doing so, i believe first developed my love for singing which would then encourage me to write songs of my own. From there, my passion for writing would only deepen driving me to expand my interest in hip hop, poetry, short stories, then eventually screen writing.
Although I stopped writing music around age 16, by age 19 I would discover my love for screen writing and released my first short film in 2020 titled “Heart of the City”.
It wasn’t until 2019 when I received a publishing for a poem of mine titled “Sunflower”, that I would open up alot more publicly with my writing. Receiving a publishing for something I created and it being recognized by strangers that just genuinely enjoyed reading what I’d written, showed me that it was okay to show people more of my work and even motivated the idea that I could possibly make a life off simply doing what I love. Since then, at age 23, I’ve written and released 2 short films under my Film Production Company “Melanova Films” with my most recent short film, “The Woman in Red”, coming very soon. In addition to that, I’ve recently rediscovered my passion for song writing and currently am developing a 2 part project titled “Lullabies & Lull Goodbyes” which is planned to release between the months February and March.
With that being said, with my writing it is my ultimate goal to positively impact the people around me and share something meaningful for those of who will read, listen, or watch my work both now and in the future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the main struggles I feel I’ve encountered or even still encounter on this ongoing journey is finding my most authentic voice. Pertaining to both music and film, I feel as though our creative voice/expression is something that is constantly evolving as we grow, learn, and experience more of what life has to throw at us. Just as we are constantly rediscovering new parts of ourselves as we get older or perhaps even adapting to change, as an artist creatively you are just as subjective to change and in constant pursuit of rediscovery. Aside from that, being my own worst critic and too often giving into overthinking.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a film director, screen writer, poet, and song writer. Pertaining to film, so far I specialize in romantic drama films thus my 2 most recent films each tell a love story that ends in tragedy. I believe my poetry coincides with a lot of my work too, rather it’s through my dialogue or poetic montages that have been in all of my work thus far. Musically I’m very passionate about hip hop but can also go r&b and neo soul.
With poetry I wouldn’t say I specialize in any form specifically, but I’m heavily inspired by nature and influenced by my personal life experiences.
I’m most proud of the amount of passion I have behind my work and the reason why I do create. I view creativity as God’s gift of how individuals perceive the world and the things around them. Artist have the power to change the world in their own individual way by making either a positive impact or a negative one. With that being said, i believe what sets me apart is my perspective on creativity and the positive I want to make with my own.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as a certain level of freedom and happiness. If you have not only accomplished all of your goals but are content with your life, exceed all of your needs, and are loved by the people in your life, you are truly successful.
