Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Garner Jr.
Hi Jimmy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born into a household of optimism and resiliance. From the earliest moments of my memories, I can remember being taught to not fear standing out or apart. In school, sports, amoungst family and friends, in life. In elementary I would have to wear a tie on Wednesdays every week. It was my parents’ idea and I really didn’t like it at first. Why can’t I just where uniform? My teachers would love to see this but some of my peers questioned and even tried to bully me for it. But I never stopped because I had no choice, but I also gained a sense of my own reasoning for it. I find this situation is a parallel for many choices I make for myself as I grow. I make a choice that I feel is unique to me genuinely. Some people like it, some don’t. When my intention is pure, I feel my light radiating and those who understand me or relate, gravitate to energy we share. Those who feel indifferent, become less of an obstacle and more of an audience. My force is continuous and I pray to stay balanced enough to always use it for good. That is who I am rather it be portrayed through my art, my actions, or anything apart of my real life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest journey but I handle the good and bad with grace. I am dynamic as a person, and even in my pursuit of pure good, I find some people still think I’m doing too much, or not enough. But my biggest struggle is the battle within myself, and how I deal with these things. I think thats spiritual, and being aware of the battle is knowing how to approach it. It’s bigger than me, and that understanding gets me through one battle after the next. I find myself thinking far into the future, admiring better versions of who I will become. And in my current reality I fall somewhere in-between the present me and my best self, sometimes close to it, sometimes far away. I find it much better than falling back to who I once grew from.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist. I have many practices but Hip Hop culture is the ship that has helped guide me on my voyage of expression. As a rapper, producer, and creative director, I bring ideas to life in the most real way I can. My “why” is my people, my community, and most importantly, the youth. I also educate youth about trees and I have planted more than 200 myself. This was a rather surprising part of my journey, but nature is what truly has opened me up the beauty of the world and where I fall in it. My art is as natural as the weeds that grow through cracks in the sidewalk. It just won’t stop. I am proud of my ability to still imagine my future self and continue to project it in my art and in my actions as a human. What separates me from others is the realm of me. The way I walk, talk, think, are all just my version of life. Even the way I’m currently describing myself. Its like my soul is constantly breaking off to zoom out on the vessel I am. That is me being me.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Im open to connect with people however the moment makes it possible. Rather that be social media, in-person, or from friend to friend. I’m not hard to find if you’re looking for me.
