Rising Stars: Meet Jessie Berkshires

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Berkshires.

Jessie Berkshires

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Jessie Berkshires, an electronic musician based just outside of Detroit. My musical journey began as a hobby but has since blossomed into a full-fledged passion and career. I work alongside my husband in our home studio, where we compose, produce, and perform our music.

As a multi-instrumentalist and composer, I thrive on the creative process and enjoy every aspect of making music. From laying down the first beat to refining the final mix, I am deeply involved in every step. Music is more than just a profession for me; it’s a way to express my creativity and connect with others.

In addition to my music, I’m always engaged in artistic and community projects. I believe in the power of art to bring people together and make a positive impact. Over the past year, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to release my music and share it with a growing audience. This journey has been transformative, allowing me to connect my art with people on a profound level.

I’m excited to continue this path, exploring new sounds and building deeper connections with my listeners.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest obstacles I face as an artist is learning how to put myself out there. Taking that initial step to share my ideas with the world is daunting. It requires vulnerability and courage, and it’s a significant leap for any artist.

I also grapple with the natural ebbs and flows of the creative process. Some days, inspiration flows effortlessly, while other times, it feels like an uphill battle. Navigating these fluctuations can be challenging, but they are an integral part of the artistic journey.

Another challenge I encounter is classifying the music my husband and I create. As we continue to find and refine our sound, it’s difficult to neatly categorize our work. This journey of discovery is ongoing and not always a linear process, but it’s one I embrace wholeheartedly.

Despite these challenges, I’m committed to sharing everything—every beat, melody, and moment of inspiration. This journey, with all its ups and downs, is what makes the experience of being an indie artist so rewarding.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m excited to announce that my new single, “Pillars,” will be released on June 21, 2024. It’s one of my best works yet, showcasing the artistic and collaborative growth in my creative process. Releasing music and finding my sound has been an incredible journey, especially in such a vibrant time for indie artists.

As an artist based in Detroit—the birthplace of electronic music—I’m eager to contribute to its dynamic scene. I continue to perform live, both with my band and solo, which allows me to showcase new music and connect with local audiences.

In addition to music, I’m deeply involved in creating visuals for my releases. Crafting music videos independently has been a new and fulfilling endeavor, allowing me to connect even more deeply with my songs. This has also helped me build a steady following on YouTube.

Looking ahead, you can expect more singles, live streams, behind-the-scenes content, and live shows. Follow me on social media to stay updated on all the latest releases and performances.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and can you share any important lessons or epiphanies with us?
In this industry, tough times are a daily reality. It’s crucial to have a trustworthy network of real-life connections who can support you and help you navigate your path without falling victim to scams. I’ve encountered numerous predatory promoters and playlist companies that prey on artists.

Staying vigilant is essential. Always remember that it’s ultimately about creating music. There are many people out there who will try to exploit artists, so keeping your focus on your craft and surrounding yourself with reliable allies is key.
