Rising Stars: Meet Jenn Strobl of Grand Rapids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Strobl.

Hi Jenn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey began back in high school when I received my very first camera as a gift. What started as a fun way to capture friends, nature, and everyday life quickly blossomed into a true passion. In college, I took a photography class that really opened my eyes to the craft—the beautiful balance between technical skill and creative expression. That’s when I fell in love with the idea that a single photo can freeze a feeling, preserve a fleeting moment, and tell a story that words sometimes can’t quite capture.

As the years went on, my skills and creativity continued to grow. In 2020, I took a leap of faith and began pursuing photography professionally. I started part time only photographing families and couples, learning the ins and outs of the business and pouring into mentorship, education, and practice that helped shape the photographer I’ve become. In 2021, I felt a strong pull to go full-time, which led me to focus more intentionally on weddings and elopements—moments rich with emotion, beauty, and meaning.

Over the past few years, I’ve traveled and lived in Colorado and Tennessee, but I’ve since returned to Michigan, where my business first began. While I’m now based in the Midwest, I love traveling near and far to capture the memories that matter most to my clients. It is an incredible gift from God to do this as my career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While this journey has been incredibly beautiful, it hasn’t been without its challenges. There have been days when self-doubt crept in—moments where I questioned if I was truly good enough, or if my work would resonate with others. I’ve had to grow through tricky lighting situations, dive deep into the world of marketing, and navigate the many layers of running a business. One of the biggest lessons has been learning to trust in my own creative voice and believe that the way I see the world is something others will find beautiful too.

There have been seasons where everything felt seamless and full of momentum, and others that came with more struggle and uncertainty. But I wouldn’t change any of it. Each step—both the smooth and the messy—has led me to where I am today, and for that, I’m truly grateful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What I love most about photography is to exercise my creativity and the ability to capture the beautiful details—the subtle glances, the gentle hand-holds, the laughter between poses, and all the other moments that tell the bigger story. I find so much joy in documenting who people truly are, whether that’s celebrating their love on a wedding day, the bond within a family, or their passion for their business during a branding session. Every person has a story, and I consider it a privilege to help tell it through my lens.

At the heart of my work is a deep appreciation for the beauty God has created in each of us and in every place. From the golden light of a sunset to the emotion in a father and mother’s eyes as he walks his daughter down the aisle, I believe every moment is a reflection of His creation and love. Photography, for me, is more than a business; it’s a way to serve others, to celebrate connection, and to reflect the beauty He has placed in this world.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Stepping into photography full time was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken. There’s so much uncertainty—you never really know if you’ll book enough clients or if the next season will bring the same momentum as the last. As someone who finds comfort in structure, plans, and clear steps, the unpredictability of running a creative business felt especially daunting. For me, that meant starting part-time—taking time to grow my skills, find my unique style, and build a foundation before making the leap. Everyone’s path looks different, and I recognize the privilege of having a supportive husband who helps provide stability, which isn’t the case for everyone. If you’re considering taking a similar risk in your own journey, my biggest piece of advice is to give yourself grace, trust your timing, and remember that slow and steady growth is still growth. There’s no one “right” way to chase a dream.
