Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Eccleston.
Hi Jeff, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been someone who enjoys building things and figuring out how to make them better. Golf has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid. I played competitively through high school and college, passed my PGA Playing Ability Test, and spent time working in the golf industry. That experience gave me a real appreciation for the traditions and craftsmanship that make the game special.
Over time, I realized my passion wasn’t just playing golf—it was creating things that enhance the experience. That led me to start Campfire Clubs, where I design and build handcrafted wood products for golf courses, clubs, tournaments, and members. Everything is made by hand, from custom trophies and signs to clocks, bag rests, podiums, course furnishings, and one-piece wooden putters. I enjoy taking an idea from a sketch and turning it into something that’s built to last.
Today I’m fortunate to work with clubs around the country on custom projects that combine craftsmanship, creativity, and functionality. My goal has always been simple: create unique pieces that people are proud to display and that tell a story. Every project is an opportunity to leave something behind that becomes part of a club’s history, and that’s what motivates me every day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges has been that there really isn’t a defined category for what I do. When I tell people I build wooden golf clubs, that’s only part of the story. It often leads to questions because there aren’t many people doing what I do, and most don’t realize that my work also includes custom golf course furnishings, trophies, signage, and other one-of-a-kind woodworking projects. Early on, I spent a lot of time helping people understand the value of custom craftsmanship and what makes my work different from something that’s mass-produced.
I’ve also learned that every project is different, so there isn’t a playbook. Each client comes with a unique vision, and it’s my job to take an idea that may only exist in their head and turn it into something functional, beautiful, and built to last. That can be challenging, but it’s also what makes the work rewarding. Over time, the quality of my work and referrals from satisfied clients have become the best way to communicate what I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m best known for building handcrafted wooden golf clubs, especially my one-piece wooden clubs. Each club starts as a solid block of wood and is shaped, balanced, and finished entirely by hand. There aren’t many people making clubs this way anymore, and I take a lot of pride in preserving that level of craftsmanship while proving that traditional woodworking still has a place in the modern game.
What really sets me apart is my ability to take an idea—sometimes nothing more than a conversation or a rough sketch—and turn it into something people didn’t think was possible. I enjoy pushing the boundaries of woodworking while staying true to timeless craftsmanship. Every piece is built to tell a story, not just serve a purpose.
Over the years, I’ve become known as someone who can create just about anything in the golf world. If it’s handmade and has anything to do with golf, I’m your guy. That’s become my reputation, and it’s something I’ve worked hard to earn.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
