Today we’d like to introduce you to Harrison Lourim.
Hi Harrison, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been making music all my life. When I was in elementary school my super supportive parents bought me a Tascam digital portastudio recording device. From there everything changed. I started recording songs and albums and when I was in middle school started to digitize my recordings using Ableton Live and FL Studio. I spent years working with local artists, producing and recording in those softwares. Then I went to the University of Michigan for their performing arts technology program and that really changed my game. Working at the collegiate level with feedback from professors and peers really leveled my abilities up and readied me for going into the industry as a professional. From there I’ve spent about 8 years working with artists local and all over the world in a professional environment. My favorite studio to work out of is Northside Audio in Berkley. All the engineers there are a good friend group that challenge and support me daily. I’ve made a full time job out of producing, recording, mixing and mastering for friends and clients and I couldn’t be more grateful. Every day feels like a dream working on different fun styles of music! I still produce in Ableton but record in Pro Tools and am always looking for more driven, inspired artists to work with!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing about my journey has been smooth. I got incredibly sick with stomach problems at age 13 and was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 22. I actually made my LLC for 11Eleven Sound with my parents during my first round of chemotherapy as a distraction, and that’s what it’s stood for since is hope for a better tomorrow. Pushing through these struggles and the complications that came with it has been a huge source of inspiration for my music as well as a good distraction. I’ve also struggled with more common issues as well like building and sustaining a clientele, perfecting my craft, finding a reliable studio with the right equipment and dealing with some more aggressive personalities that come in the studio.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in Pop, Rap, EDM, RnB, Rock and Indie production, mixing and mastering. I’m known for my clean and full sounding records as well as a couple of songs I’ve made such as “Joumana” which was played on Channel 95.5. I’ve also worked with tons of notable artists like Kodak Black and I built Icewear Vezzo’s current studio. I did most of the recording for the “Paint the City” mixtape. I’m really proud of my ability to wear “multiple hats” and switch between genres. I think that sets me apart from other producers is I’ll make an aggressive dubstep song and a calm indie song back to back in sessions and I can produce the results the artist wants in any scenario. I love diving into the artists world deeper than just the song itself but the inspiration and meaning behind it so I can fully immerse myself and make the record as incredible as possible. I don’t just think of my work as a job I like to have fun and try new techniques that bring records to life.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I find myself to be very lucky. I work hard to promote myself and do good work in the studio but at the end of the day there is definitely an element of luck that brings people my way that I’m very grateful for. I also am very lucky to have a very supportive wife and family that make working weird hours and having to leave in a split second for a last minute session easy. I’m also lucky to work with really cool people. My job is also fun every day because the people that come in are nice, respectful, friendly and overall fun to work with which I’m very grateful for.
