Rising Stars: Meet Gregory Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Anderson.

Hi Gregory, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I came to Ann Arbor on a Knight-Wallace Fellowship to the University of Michigan, which is a mid-career sabbatical for journalists. After spending a year here, my family decided to stay. I still write stories occasionally, but mostly I transitioned into photography, and I work as a portrait and commercial photographer from my home studio.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road of life for me has been a sort of Rubicon Trail. Lots of ups and downs, but I’ve always enjoyed the view. I think that’s why I’m a photographer—I can enjoy the view no matter where I am. There’s always something interesting to see, even in the banal routines of everyday life, and the way light hits objects is endlessly fascinating to me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in portraits. I think everyone has at least a few good angles, and I think my talent is in finding the flattering angles of any face. Also, perhaps because my background is in storytelling, I like to create portraits and images that tell stories in some way. It can be with an environment, a pose, a prop, an expression, or even a simple gesture.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The technology industry is pushing video, and I think video will continue to be trending, but I also think that there’s something special about still photos. We’re freezing a moment in time with a photograph, and that’s kind of a superpower.
