Today we’d like to introduce you to Freshauna Goodman.
Hi Freshauna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Freshauna Goodman, and I authored a children’s book that centers around colorism titled, “Yes, I’m Sure She’s My Mom.” I took the painful encounters experienced with my son and created a teachable moment. It is my hope that this book will be used to teach young readers how to celebrate, embrace, and be proud of their differences while at the same time appreciating the uniqueness of all skin colors.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Having birthed and now raising a biracial child has not been a fairly smooth road. Unfortunately, when most see my son and I they see color; igorance, racism, and colorism are still very much so relevant today. However, as a mother, I will always put forth the effort to make sure my son and I are able to have and live the life I prefer for us despite the color of our skin.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
This book is an excellent resource for young readers. The illustrations, reflecting mommy and baby animals, teach readers about skin tone and diversity. I am currently working on having my book placed at the Zoofari Market inside of the Detroit Zoo.

What a noteworthy read. It heightens my awareness of colorism and judging. I’m better. Because of this book. Kids had questions and it opens the door for questions on how to be a better educated human.
