Rising Stars: Meet Evans Tasiopoulos of Detroit/Grosse Pointe Farms

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evans Tasiopoulos

Hi Evans, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Detroit, but my childhood summers were spent in Kalamata, Greece. Both places feel like home to me, and each has shaped who I am today—not just as an artist, but as a person as well. Detroit is , with its vibrant energy and nonstop hustle, while Kalamata gave me a taste of the quiet beauty of Greece. These two worlds—one full of city life, the other full of sunshine and sea—gave me a unique way of looking at the world, blending the urban and the tranquil.

Detroit will always have my heart. Growing up, a lot of people saw the city as one in disrepair, focusing on its struggles. I’ve always wanted to show a different side of Detroit—the beauty, the strength, and the soul that make this city so unique. That’s what I try to capture with my photography. When I’m behind the camera, it’s not just about snapping a picture—it’s about capturing the heartbeat of the city. I want people to see Detroit for what it truly is: a place with energy, life, and endless stories waiting to be told. But beyond that, I want to show people how I see the beauty in this world—often the details that others might overlook.

I come from a family of Greek immigrants, so Greece has always felt like a second home. My connection to the country is deeply personal. It’s not just about the ancient history or the breathtaking landscapes—it’s about my family’s history as well. I’m always reminded of where I come from and the history that continues to shape me.

My work has been featured in some incredible places like the Museum of New Art, The Scarab Club, Tangent Gallery and the Marlene Boll Gallery. It’s also appeared in magazines like Pure Michigan and Hour Detroit, and even made its way to The Detroit International Autoshow and the television show Grosse Pointe Garden Society. I’ve been lucky enough to share my photography internationally too, with exhibitions in Venice and Rome and even a feature on the Greek network Antenna. I was also honored to have my work displayed in the lobby of the Detroit Renaissance Center—something I’m incredibly proud of!

Through my photography, I want to capture the spirit of the places I’ve called home and the ones I’ve yet to explore. Ultimately, I want to share the beauty I see in this world—through my eyes, and hopefully through the eyes of those who experience my work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whats the fun in a smooth road?! The bumps and setbacks are what make life interesting. Early on, I had plenty of doubts and roadblocks, from struggling to get my work noticed to finding my artistic voice. But those challenges helped me grow—both as an artist and a person. They taught me resilience and patience and that the best things in life don’t come easy. If it was all smooth sailing, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I’m most proud of is that…along with a couple of very close friends, we founded The MATI Group, an art collective close to my heart that’s all about giving back to Detroit’s art scene. For the past 20-plus years, we’ve been working to bring emerging artists together, curate large-scale exhibitions, and celebrate the creativity that makes Detroit such a special place. It’s been a rewarding way to connect and give back to the city’s artistic community and contribute to its growth.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
One of my biggest supporters and mentors has always been my wife. She constantly inspires me and pushes me to grow, both as an artist and as a person. I’m incredibly lucky to have her by my side, always encouraging me to keep going, even when things get tough. My family and friends have been just as supportive—constantly cheering me on, giving me honest feedback, but always in a way that’s loving and constructive. I’m truly grateful to have such a wonderful support system that challenges me while always having my back. Their belief in me has been a huge part of my journey!
