Today we’d like to introduce you to David Bryant.
Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Absolutely. I go by KingSuede — artist, producer, and creative director. My journey started like many others: with a dream, a laptop, and a deep love for music that spoke to the soul. I grew up inspired by the raw emotion of R&B, the storytelling of hip-hop, and the smooth textures of soul and funk. I started out at 4 producing beats on my mom’s Ensonic TS12
And from there I had one piano lesson with Nate Glasper at Great Ellington at the age of 9, and also writing songs just to express what I couldn’t say out loud.
Over time, that passion evolved into something more intentional. I linked up with other creatives, sharpened my sound, and started releasing music that reflected who I truly am — not just as an artist, but as a man. I eventually found my lane blending nostalgic R&B vibes with modern production and honest lyricism. That’s how KingSuede was born.
Now, I’m proud to be working with A.O.K. The Label, continuing to push boundaries and release music that hits different. Every track I create, whether I’m producing, singing, or writing, is a piece of my story — raw, real, and soulful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road — and honestly, I wouldn’t want it to be. The struggles are part of what gave my music its depth.
There were times when I doubted myself heavy, when I was creating music that nobody heard, and still pushing through with nothing but faith and drive. I’ve dealt with financial setbacks, losing people I cared about, mental burnout — all while trying to stay creative and stay true to myself in an industry that constantly tries to box you in.
One of the hardest parts was learning patience. This game doesn’t reward you overnight, and I had to learn how to trust the timing of my growth — not just as an artist, but as a man. But every challenge sharpened me. It taught me resilience, discipline, and most importantly, how to turn pain into art.
So no, it hasn’t been easy — but it’s been real. And that’s the foundation I stand on.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist, songwriter, and producer, but more than that, I’m a storyteller. I specialize in blending classic R&B textures with modern soul, trap, and pop elements — creating music that’s both emotionally honest and sonically rich. Whether I’m singing, arranging vocals, or building a beat from scratch, I aim to make people feel something real.
I’m known for my voice, my pen, and my ability to craft full songs that carry weight — not just catchy hooks. People tell me my sound feels nostalgic but still fresh, like something you didn’t know you needed until you heard it. That balance is intentional.
What I’m most proud of is my upcoming solo album Silk Electric. It’s the first time I’m fully stepping into the spotlight as a singer, front to back. I wrote and arranged every track, and most of the production is between me and ToneJonez. It’s the most vulnerable I’ve ever been on a project — soulful, intimate, and genre-bending.
What sets me apart is that I’m not chasing trends. I’m building something timeless. I’m not afraid to sing about love, pain, or healing in a world that often prioritizes image over substance. Everything I create comes from a real place. That’s my foundation, and that’s what I bring to the table every time.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
No doubt, I wouldn’t be where I am without the people who believed in me, especially during the moments when I didn’t fully believe in myself.
First and foremost, shoutout to Malcom Shakur — CEO of A.O.K. The Label. He’s been a major part of my journey, not just as a label head but as a mentor and real-life example of how to move with purpose and integrity in this industry. He saw something in me early on and gave me the space to grow, create, and evolve.
Also, big love to ToneJonez. His production work and musicality are unmatched, and collaborating with him has elevated my sound on a whole new level. He’s helped me refine the vision for Silk Electric and push myself creatively as both an artist and producer.
And then there’s my inner circle — friends, family, and supporters who kept me grounded and reminded me why I started. The people who shared my songs, pulled up to shows, offered honest feedback, or just checked in to make sure I was good — they all played a role.
I’m blessed to have a team around me that values the art just as much as I do. It’s never just one person. It’s always a collective effort — and I’m grateful for every single one of them. Also I’d like to thank my mother, Shayla Gist who has been my inspiration for everything musical in my life, from the music I listen to, to even the way I create. She is my rock and will always be my mom but has also been the best guide and best friend I could ever ask for, and I’d also like to thank my father Marcel Sanders for the musical inclined bloodline that has been passed down generation after generation!
