Rising Stars: Meet Brett Farmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Farmer.

Hi Brett, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I went on a work trip to Portugal in 2014 with just a cell phone and was so disappointed with the images I got back then, that when I got home, I went straight to Best Buy and bought a Canon t3i camera starter kit. For the first 2-3 years it was very much a small hobby that I would take the camera out every couple of months or on vacation. That was when it suddenly snowballed, and I fell in love with photography. It became a stress reliever or my escape from reality. From 2018 to 2020 I upgraded to the Canon 6D Mark II and started to get into real estate with a friend I had met at Steven Vanderwarp Real Estate. As well as shooting Grand Valley State University football games. When 2020 hit, ironically my biggest leap forward was when COVID hit, I managed to capture some drone and street-level photos of downtown Grand Rapids completely empty that went viral. At the same time, I had some massive uptick in print sales. At the end of 2020, I had one of my biggest assignments for “The Bridge” covering a political campaign rally. However, 2021 was my huge breakout year, where I got to shoot for “The Detroit News” at the Detroit Grand Prix, where I gathered some connections that is allowing me to shoot several racing events across the country this year. I also was featured in ArtPrize in the lobby of the Amway Grand Plaza in 2021 with one of my drone shots from April of 2020 during COVID when they lit up the Amway and JW Marriott as a salute to healthcare workers and a moment of solidarity for the city.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part compared to a lot it has been an insane fast and almost smooth road. Obviously, there has been their struggles but I feel very fortunate for the friendships, and connections I have made.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I started out as a landscape photographer, and I still love to do that, but my spare time to shoot landscapes is not nearly as much anymore. I specialize in sports (football and motorsport mainly). I would say I am most proud of how far and fast I have grown, as well as the friendships I have gained and places I have gotten to go.
