Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Attisha.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have had a whirlwind of a career! After graduating from Wayne State University Law School in 2017, I worked at Saurbier Law Firm practicing medical malpractice defense. In 2019, an opportunity arose to really give back to my community through working at the Chaldean Community Foundation (CCF) as a grant writer. The CCF is a wonderful organization that helps thousands of new immigrants adjust to life in the United States, as a grant writer I helped to obtain funding for non-profit programs to support CCF’s clientele. I loved grant writing, but wanted to get back into the practice of law. In September of 2021, I decided to start my own practice – Attisha Law PLC. My practice focuses on real estate and criminal defense matters.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There is no smooth road to success. There were plenty of struggles – working at a non-profit designed to help vulnerable members of society during the Covid-19 pandemic was very difficult. Many people didn’t know how to interpret the government executive orders for safety, were worried about losing everything, and had lost income sources. The grant writing picked up during this time to assist people as much as possible during Covid-19. When starting my law firm I had plenty of “imposter syndrome” and had to work on gaining my confidence as an attorney again. This was very difficult because I had to trust in my ability to properly advise clients and strategically win cases. I had to believe in myself, my abilities and my work ethic and jumped right into it. I’m incredibly grateful for the guidance and support I’ve received from my law mentors over the years. Their wisdom, integrity, and example have deeply influenced who I am today—not just as an attorney, but as a business owner and a young professional finding my way. I carry their lessons with me every day, and I’m proud to build my career on the foundation they helped me create.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
After starting my firm, in 2020 I decided to run for City Council of Keego Harbor. Putting myself out there to the public and asking people to place their trust in me and vote for me was one of the scariest things I have done. I had a tremendous outpouring of support that I will never forget from my family and friends. Even my elementary school gym teacher was making calls and asking people to vote for me! I won the election by less than 70 votes. I served on City Council for three years and during the third year the council members elected me to become Mayor Pro Tem of Keego Harbor. During my time there, I served on Parks and Recreation, wrote grants for the city and was a committed member of City Council. I am most proud of the effort I put in to win that election, being a member of City Council while continuously growing and operating my law firm at the same time. The hard work and effort made me believe I could achieve anything.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’ve always believed that with great risk comes great reward, but I also know that risk must be taken mindfully. The biggest risk I ever took was quitting my jobs to start my own law firm. It turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made. At the time, I was single, had no children, and was living at my parents’ house. I didn’t have many responsibilities, which gave me the freedom to go all in on building my practice. I eventually moved into an office in downtown Detroit and was able to move out of my parent’s house—but none of that would have been possible without the support system I had in place. Growing up in an entrepreneurial household taught me the benefits of entrepreneurship and risk-taking. I watched my parents build and run their own businesses with resilience and a customer-focused mindset. They modeled what it meant to work hard, take ownership, and treat every customer with care and respect—lessons I now carry into my own legal practice every day. Their encouragement and example gave me both the courage to take risks and the foundation to do it wisely.
