Rising Stars: Meet Andrew Kuns of Conifer, Colorado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Kuns

Hi Andrew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Southeast Michigan, and spent most of my childhood on a farm, learning how to raise animals and caring for the land. I spent much of my time outdoors on the farm or going camping with my boy scout troop. I gained a great appreciation for nature and what it has to provide for us, or to take away from us without proper understanding. After I left home, I attended university, earning an Engineering degree in Computer Science, but still found myself heading to the mountains to ski, or most weekends to camp or just wander around in the metroparks.

In 2009, I took a motorcycle trip to the west, after spending a summer rebuilding the machine from the ground up. My friend and I aspired to ride across the country with the furthest point being Yellowstone. One stop was at Rocky Mountain National park, and I was in awe at the vast expanse of mountainous terrain that lay before me. Never before in my life had I experienced a place so majestic.

Adventure became one with me, grabbing me entirely, and I strived to find more adventure in my life. After settling down and starting a family, my wife and I decided to uproot ourselves and re-locate to the Rocky Mountains, where we currently live. I am able to get out often, away from a connected life to see herds of elk, rock outcroppings, eagles soaring in the thermals, and the bluest of skies.

I have always enjoyed taking pictures and video since I can remember, and have immersed myself in capturing my adventures as I explore the wonders of our beautiful Earth. My goal of spreading inspiration to those that seek adventures, whether they are multi day trips in the backcountry, or a micro-adventure on a Sunday afternoon is my passion.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I aim to organically grow my adventures. I’m doing this for the spirit of it and to challenge myself. There are always struggles in anything you do, but if you can get through them, you will come out a stronger person. I’ve been stuck in the backcountry in my truck, hanging on the side of a mountain, my truck close to tumbling down the side, lost in Patagonia overnight after navigating down the wrong trail, but those experiences have made me a more resilient person, striving to find the next challenge.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I started my career after college as an Engineer and currently am employed at Ford, working remote from Colorado. I have the pleasure of working on some amazing products that give people the ability to mobilize to get out and explore. Working remote in Colorado gives me the chance to prove and motivate myself to stay focused on my goals at work while in my home office.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
We decided to move to Colorado just before Covid hit. We actually moved during Covid, which was an interesting move. My kids were attending school remotely while in Michigan at the end of their school year, and started their new school year in Colorado partly remote. We didn’t get to say goodbye to many of our family and friends in person.

The timing of our move worked well for us, though. We moved from a partly remote area in Michigan, to the middle of the mountains, where we camped and watched the wildlife from our living room window. City life was never much for us with close quarters of living spaces.
