Today we’d like to introduce you to Umi Wright.
Umi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
This is a second career for me. I used to work in early childhood education but after 9 years of being in that field, I decided to journal on a lunch break to brainstorm possible career changes. As I was journaling, I knew I wanted a job that was still nurturing and hands-on with others. That’s when the thought of massage therapy suddenly dropped in my Spirit like an “ah-ha” moment. I would always massage for fun and get compliments on my touch but I never took it seriously until that moment. I immediately decided to go to massage school and worked at two places after graduation all while knowing I wanted a business of my own. Having this business has been a beautiful journey of continuously learning myself, loving myself, and letting that energy overflow and touch others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This road has definitely been an interesting ride. When I first started this business, my largest passion was in nurturing others and massaging as many people as possible. I found such validation in participating in the healing of others. This passion eventually became a burnout and I found myself becoming more tired and having less time for me and my personal life. I also started to find a more clear voice in how I provided my services. I noticed I was attracting clients that didn’t necessarily align with my style of work. I love to massage and also do energy work as well. My touch has a holistic approach that intends on providing healing on levels deeper than just the muscle. I changed my title from Massage Therapist to Intuitive Bodywork Specialist as it was a better fit to who I am as a bodyworker. After reflecting on my own state of well-being, I started making adjustments in my business that took better care of me. I created a schedule for me that gave me more work-life balance and rented a suite that I could use for more than just my bodywork services alone. I also decided to tap into my love for blending essential oils and will soon start selling my own brand of essential oil blends.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Back to Me Massage & Wellness LLC?
The concept of my business is that people can come to a sacred space to feel brand new and reset their mind, body, and spirit. Clients come in being able to take a break from the world that can be so demanding and come back to themselves and remember the importance of nurturing themselves first.
I specialize in providing 60/90-minute bodywork sessions that really meets the client where they are. They have the choice to create a bodywork session that works best for them. Whether it’s a relaxing massage, deep tissue, energy work, or a beautiful balance of all three the client truly gets that time to be taken care of and replenished.
The biggest thing that sets me apart is that most of my clients give a very similar feedback. They have a spiritual experience that feels uplifting and refreshing. They feel safe to relax and be nurtured. I am most proud of being a vessel of Love and Light where the client can communicate with their physical/spiritual body again in a way that inspires them to practice a life of self-care beyond the massage table.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Quality and characteristics most important to success is being authentic within yourself in your business. Making sure each decision is made with integrity. Stay present in gratitude but also continuously be open to learn and create new opportunities for yourself and others. Keep going even when there are challenges and make adjustments to make your vision align with who you are. Value yourself and value your relationships. Nurture yourself first so that it becomes more effortless to nurture your vision. Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes.
