Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Mulville.
Hi Tyler, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Rochester Hills, Michigan attending Rochester High School and eventually Michigan State University (Go Green). A lot of my childhood I was always drawing, painting or creating some kind of art in my free time. I always knew that I would end up going into a creative or artistic job because it always interested me and sparked my imagination. Making movies with my brother and cousins is where I really started to get into filmmaking and storytelling, I owe a lot of my start to them because they always went along with some of my weird ideas and different movies we wanted to make.
My brother definitely pushed me into the filmmaking direction while I attended Michigan State University and it was here where I figured out how I could make a living with storytelling. I got the opportunity to direct and produce a student news show called MSU&U where we went around campus connecting students to the events around campus.
Once I graduated MSU in 2014 I headed home and continued working for the City of Rochester Hills during the summertime cutting grass and chopping down trees while I searched for a job more in my field. In late 2014 my brother sent me a text telling me to contact this company, Mike Staff Productions to get my feet wet in the wedding industry. I ended up shooting several weddings with them that summer and eventually became a full-time editor for the company. It was also here where I got to learn from some really incredible videographers in Michigan including one of my mentors, Jason and Michelle. They taught me all about how the wedding industry works and how to navigate through all the ins and outs of a wedding day. It was also here where I would meet my fiancé, Skylar, who made Tyler James Motion Pictures what it is today. She is the reason why I ended up making my own production company and the main proponent of pushing me to where I am today.
This current wedding season has definitely been one of the most challenging that I can remember in all 7 of my wedding season. This being the first full season with my own company has been extremely humbling and rewarding at the same time. I am extremely grateful to all the clients that I have worked with and all the different vendors I’ve worked alongside as well. I can’t wait to see what 2022 has to offer!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Last year was of course a hard year for a lot of people and it definitely made the wedding industry a tough place to be in with the pandemic. The weddings were all rescheduling or even canceling making the shoots far and few in-between. It really forced myself to get more creative with my work and allowed me to become a better filmmaker but also better photographer in my free time.
This current season has been a challenge as well. With all the reschedules and wedding dates I was capturing a wedding nearly every weekend. I also shot more triples (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) than I ever thought possible, but with the support of my fiancé Skylar I was able to make it through the long weekends. I also can’t thank my family enough for being patient with me this season. Nearly every weekend was booked and I didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time seeing everyone which can be very tough after not getting together for over a year. If there was a motto for myself in getting through this wedding season it would be “Keep Going”
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a wedding filmmaker and own my own company called Tyler James Motion Pictures. Whether you are getting married on top of a mountain or in your family’s backyard, I want to tell your story. My goal at every wedding is to perfectly capture all the emotions of your day through my filmmaking so when you re-watch it every year on your anniversary you can relive the best day of your lives. I am definitely most proud of how well my wedding films turn out and how different they all are. Everyone has such different stories on how they met, where the come from, and all the unique backstories to their wedding, and being able to me a part of their big day is very humbling.
What are your plans for the future?
I am definitely looking forward to the 2022 wedding season because it will be just as busy but also just as much fun. I also will be getting married to Skylar in August so we cannot wait for that as well!
