Meet Tolice Nether of Kona Ice of Southfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tolice Nether.

Tolice, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as an Occupational Therapist being employed in a variety of settings form nursing homes to schools. It was my love of helping people that got me there. I was fortunate that one year before the 2020 pandemic I was able to secure a remote position using my healthcare skills to assist with the insurance side of the industry. Although I enjoyed being at home and having the flexibility to be home with my family it soon became a heavy burden on me to look beyond the walls of my home to find purpose. After close to 20 years of being in the healthcare industry and support of my loved ones, I decided to step out on faith. I am a structured type of person who does not like the uncertainty of taking a “risk”, but I knew life behind a desk was no longer for me. It was then that I decided to quit my job and work as an administrator for a church (Crossover Church in Southfield, MI) my husband and I planted in 2016. I soon had to learn how to navigate the how to better lead in ministry and how to manage my time without the structure of a 9-5. For someone who is used to the structure of the “corporate world” this was not an easy task. Time, prayer and patience helped. As if it was not crazy enough to step out on faith and quit my job, I decided that I wanted to pursue my entrepreneurial dream and start a Kona Ice business, Kona Ice of Southfield. This will be my first season with the truck, and I am hoping to make some summer smiles with the delicious, flavored ice. I picked Kona Ice because there is a lot of emphasis on fundraising and giving back which aligns with my values. Schools, corporations, camps, sports venues, churches and more can benefit from the Kona Ice service. So, as I embark on this new journey, I am up for the challenges ahead, look forward to the blessings that will come and hope that I can shine a light in the community that made me, Southfield, Mi.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Changing careers was not a smooth road. I had to first get pass my fears and insecurities of how am I going to do this? I realized however this was the journey I was supposed to be on when things that first appeared as challenges always seemed to work out, from getting food truck permits from the city to making sure I meet all the requirements for the health department. And of course, I wondered how I am going to afford all the things that come with having a business. Fortunately, I was able to seek advice from fellow entrepreneurs which was very helpful. It is my faith, in Jesus, that reminds me I can do all things.
