Today we’d like to introduce you to The Fat Animals Band.
Hi The Fat Animals, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The Fat Animals came together 6 years ago with bass player Shawn Kelly and guitar player Phil Wiswell. The other members. vocalist Don Daniel, guitarist Alvin Lautzenheiser, and drummer Oz Rinckey, came to the group each through their long careers as local musicians. Oz, Phil, Alvin and Don cut their teeth in the local music scene dating back to the early 90’s and knew many of the same musicians coming up. The band came together through those mutual associations. The original line-up included Colin McKernan on drums who played with Phil and Don in a previous project.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Each of us play our instruments and make music for different reasons, but the commonality we share is the joy it brings us when making and sharing music with other people. And for that, every time we play together, it is a great time no matter the situation. With that being said, I am sure we deal with the common issues affecting gigging bands ie. pay, questionable playing conditions, and busy weekends moving gear.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The Fat Animals are a five piece ensemble that fuses soul, funk, blues, and psychedelia into their selections of cover and original tunes. Our sound is realized through powerful soul-rooted vocals flanked by duelling lead guitars and a tight rhythm section. Our Music contains a catalogue of eclectic music spanning decades of the grooviest tracks, deep cuts and original numbers.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
As full time professionals and parents, taking the time away from personal responsibilities would only happen if not without our family’s support. Each of our significant others play both a direct and indirect role in making the music happen and being able to share it with other people. Whether it’s helping with the booking, managing the online presence all the way through attending our events and being our biggest cheering section, family plays a big role. Additionally, over the years we have garnered a number of dedicated attendees of our shows. we have endearingly dubbed them our “Fanimals”. Their dedication to our music gives us even more motivation to keep doing what we do.
