Meet The Currents

Today we’d like to introduce you to The Currents

Hi The Currents, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Currents (Indie/Alternative Rock) started off as the solo, studio project of Luis Gomez (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) in December 2019 with the release of the self-titled EP. After the release’s good reception and encouragement from those close to him, he decided to recruit a live band in to bring the songs to life on stage. He then recruited Tanner Wertz (lead guitar), Matt Cashin (bass guitar), and Emilio Alvarado (drums). All of whom Luis met through his experiences at the University of Toledo and family connections. After playing our first live show together in April 2022, we have now played in many midwest cities such as Toledo, Detroit, Indianapolis and will be making our way to cities such as Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland in the near future. We have also had the privilege of opening for Wheatus in our hometown.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We would be lying through our teeth if we were to say that we haven’t had any struggles from our inception until now. The biggest obstacle that has been present is booking shows out of town. This is something that every local band would comment on. With the major saturation of bands/acts in every major city in the US, booking shows is almost like a lottery at this point. The only way you earn money in music is by playing shows, the only way your music will reach other audiences is by playing out of town. If we are unable to book shows elsewhere, we have no chance of growing our audience. While you may say that social media and music platforms could help with this, it does not compare to the intimacy that comes with playing live in front of the newer audiences. Also, algorithms can easily bury your content if you do not have a larger presence. However, we have been working very hard at trying to book and to extend our music’s reach!

Another challenge we faced and continue to face is relevancy/consistency. We are in a world where everyone is focused on the next big thing. You can release a good song and it can the be the best thing ever but the listener will want or expect more from that artist. This isn’t anything bad as they just want to hear more from an artist they admire but it may put pressure on an artist to create more. This may result in songs that are rushed rather than created at the artist’s own pace. We are all perfectionists when it comes to our music and while that may be a big strength, it can be a weakness at times if we take too long to write. We are now at a place where we have that balance of writing at our own pace but also keeping in mind that timeline we have in order to stay fresh on the minds of our listeners and future listeners.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The Currents writes music that fits the Indie/Alternative Rock genre. We aim to honor the influences that we had growing up but providing something that is our own and refreshing for all those who listen. We pride ourselves on our independence as we write, record, and produce all of our own music. Emilio (drums) is an audio engineer with 5+ years of experience with tracking, mixing, and mastering so having him in our band makes the entire process smooth. What sets us apart from others is that we were all friends in some capacity before becoming bandmates. This chemistry translated over to playing music together and our working relationship.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think our humility has been and will continue to be the most important quality to our success as a band. We all come from very humble beginnings and just want to create music that we love and hold dear to our hearts. We are all confident in our abilities and put that into our songwriting but we also view every performance or studio session as a way to grow. We constantly find ways to learn and enhance our strengths and weaknesses both individually and collectively. We are never complacent and I think that is another quality of ours.
