Meet Skylar Jones of Soul with Skylar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Jones.

Hi Skylar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Soul with Skylar as a food blog just to display dinners and food that I made. I kept getting asked if I was selling food because people were loving it so much. At first, I didn’t want to because I wanted to make sure I never compromised how I made something or the quality if I started making larger portions of food. But after constant feedback and more consideration, I catered my first event for a friend and the rest of history. I continued to be booked consistently 2-3 weekends a month and grew from there. Most of my clients book brunch, which is one of my favorites to cook, but I offer Soul Food-based food even within the brunch space. My signature dishes include shrimp and grits, red velvet waffles, and lamb chops

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been struggles along the way. The first being getting timing right to ensure the food is cooked on time, arriving before the event, and setting up. I don’t think a lot of people understand the work it takes to make their event happen. It includes visiting multiple grocery stores, reviewing current inventory, preparing food the day prior, recruiting extra staff, and more. I also use quality ingredients. I want everything to be as fresh as possible, so if that means cooking at 5am, then I will do it because the results speak for themselves.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Soul with Skylar is a catering and private dining business owned and operated by Skylar Jones, specializing in brunch and soul food. I’ve had the pleasure of catering intimate gatherings for as few as two guests, as well as large-scale events of up to 150 people, ranging from baby showers to weddings. What sets me apart is my dedication to delivering high-quality food, paired with an unwavering work ethic and a promise to serve my clients nothing but the best. Among my proudest accomplishments are cooking for Zeus Network’s Baddies Midwest in 2024 and the Detroit Tigers in 2025.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think a high work ethic and passion are the most important to my success. I feel that when you are in a bad mood, it shows in your cooking, and I take what I serve my clients very seriously. Let’s be honest, food can either make or break your event. It’s a vibe check! So keeping my energy high, staying organized, and being passionate get me through each event smoothly.
