Today we’d like to introduce you to Sister Scents MI. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Sister Scents MI is a family-run business comprised of sisters, aunts, nieces, and cousins. In the early days of Spring 2020, we were on the hunt for quality candles. Our search led us to research how candles were made, and we were appalled to discover how many toxic ingredients were included in standard candle making, including chemicals like phthalates, which are known to cause premature birth, infertility in both men and women, worsen allergies, liver and kidney issues. Coming up empty for a product that checked all our boxes, we decided to make our own.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like many new businesses, the most challenging area is meeting new customers. When a business is not a known name, people tend to be a little trepidatious about you and your product because they have purchased from others before and have been burned. To attempt to overcome this obstacle, we purchase our own products before some vendor events and give them away throughout the day. With this expensive strategy, we have gained repeat customers.
Another challenge is work-life balance. Most of us have full-time positions during the day, and it can be a little difficult juggling the schedules of seven individuals to run the various aspects of a business.
Despite these challenges, we have been blessed to connect with other small business owners during events, and they have been extremely helpful in sharing tips to help us work through difficulties.

We specialize in handmade home essentials (i.e., candles, soaps, body lotions, bath soak, and more).
What are you most proud of? It’s a great feeling to have the opportunity to run a business with the core values we were raised with – faith and family. We love that we can use this opportunity to spread the Word of God by sharing a Bible scripture on each of our products. Also, the fact that we can do this and get along is a blessing that we cannot fail to mention! Lastly, we are proud to see our research and development, practice, patience, prayer, and work producing products that people enjoy.
What sets you apart from others? We utilize our individual personalities to genuinely connect with our customers. We are a faith-driven company that people can see and feel. We pray each time we hold a meeting, before making products, and before selling at vendor events. We are enjoying this journey!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
What started out as a fun hobby quickly grew into Sister Scents MI as we have seen the beauty in each other and the power in encouraging one another to work in unity to create products that we love, out of love. We believe strongly in the value of a unified family and pray that everyone experiences the power of encouragement and love that can come from it. This is why you will find the inclusion of Bible scripture on all of our product labels, supporting our Sister Scents MI mission: to inspire unity and peace and encourage others – through our gift of making.
