Hi Shatarea, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I’ve always possessed a creative spark that fueled my passion for painting, drawing, and crafting. Engaging in these artistic pursuits was not only enjoyable but also served as a therapeutic outlet for me. However, it wasn’t until I discovered makeup during my late teenage years that I truly found my calling. The thrill of transforming beauty with my own hands was an exhilarating experience like no other. I shifted my focus from traditional canvases to the human form, eager to master every aspect of makeup artistry.
I immersed myself in learning everything from special effects to bridal and dramatic makeup techniques. My goal has always been to empower women, instilling confidence and self-assurance through my work. The joy of making someone feel beautiful is what drives me. As my fascination with makeup deepened, so did my passion for the beauty industry, leading to the creation of Vanitè Cosmetics in 2019. I meticulously crafted everything, from the logo and digital marketing to branding and flyers, ensuring a personal touch for my clients. This way, I could not only create stunning looks but also provide them with the exact products used in the process.
As I continued to work with clients, I realized that while enhancing their appearance was fulfilling, helping them maintain healthy, beautiful skin was equally vital. This revelation inspired me to pursue esthetics at Douglas J Aveda, where I honed my skills in skincare. My vision was to create a brand that seamlessly blends beauty, skincare, and wellness, offering a luxurious experience for each client.
In 2024, I brought Vanitè Beauty Bar to life, a space where I can truly realize this vision. Here, I offer a range of services, including customized facials, chemical peels, full-body waxing, personalized classes, and makeup application. It’s also the official retail location for Vanitè Cosmetics, where clients can find the products that complement their beauty journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has certainly been anything but easy. There were countless moments when I felt like giving up, especially when things didn’t unfold as I had envisioned. It often felt overwhelming, particularly without a support system to lean on. I had to rely on my own determination to keep pushing forward.
Throughout my quest to build my brand, I faced numerous life challenges, including a divorce, the trials of the pandemic, and the struggles of escaping a domestic violence situation. There came a point when I realized I needed to take a step back and focus on my mental well-being before I lost myself completely.
During this time of reflection, I reconnected with my true self and reignited my passion. I channeled my pain into my craft, feeling that it was something I owed to myself. I also made prayer a central part of my life, believing that God didn’t bring me this far just to let me falter. I have faith that I am destined for a greater purpose.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a licensed esthetician, I provide a diverse array of services, including chemical peels, customized facials, waxing, and makeup application—an area in which I’ve gained considerable recognition. My creative special effects looks have even gone viral on social media multiple times, which speaks to my passion and innovation.
I take great pride in everything I’ve achieved throughout my life and in my business, and I’m genuinely excited about what the future holds. Many people would have allowed their struggles to break them, but instead, I’ve allowed those experiences to shape me into the resilient woman I am today.
What truly distinguishes me from others is that my work goes beyond makeup. Vanitè embodies a mindset—it’s about empowering women, fostering wellness, and building confidence. This mission drives me every day and inspires me to create a positive impact in the lives of those I serve.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I wouldn’t say I believe in luck. Instead, I think that each of us has a unique path that is preordained by a higher power. It’s up to us to navigate our way through the journey, discovering how to best move forward along our individual routes.
