Meet Saundra McFarland of Up North Tanning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saundra McFarland.

Hi Saundra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In June 2022, I was offered the opportunity to take over a salon that was already established.

It started as a “maybe”. A what if. A quiet idea that turned into a bold, slightly terrifying, but exciting decision…I bought a tanning salon! .

And then came the real work. Learning everything, fixing things no one else saw and
celebrating the small wins that no one else understood.

Slowly, it became more than a business.

It became a community. A safe space.
A second home for the people who walk through the doors.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Wearing every hat- Owner, manager, cleaner, therapist (because clients tell you EVERYTHING), repair coordinator. That’s all me!

What does success mean to you?
Success, for me, is a combination of financial stability, loyal clients, and running a business I’m proud of. It’s not just about making money, it’s about building something that lasts and serves people well. I want my salon to be known for cleanliness, professionalism, and great results. Positive reviews and word-of-mouth referrals tell me that customers feel good about their experience, and that’s invaluable.
