Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been a hairstylist for over 15 years, with the last decade focused almost entirely on men’s grooming. After managing a busy men’s salon for years, I realized I wanted something more personal—something of my own. That idea stayed with me through the chaos of raising kids, navigating life changes, and continually sharpening my craft. Eventually, I took the leap and opened Stark Haircuts for Men—a space rooted in quality, comfort, and community.

The name “Stark” is my maiden name, but it’s more than that. It represents the hardworking, no-nonsense values I was raised with. My family farmed nearby, and now my shop sits at the corner of Stark and Saginaw Rd., right in the heart of where my own family is growing up. I wanted the shop to feel like a blend of nostalgia and craftsmanship—something familiar, yet elevated. I didn’t want just another salon; I wanted a place where men could feel at ease, be cared for, and leave looking and feeling their best.

Today, I’m proud to say Stark Cuts is growing—not just in clients, but in purpose. It’s become a place where conversations matter just as much as the cut. I still do most of the work myself, but I’m slowly building a team that shares the same values: professionalism, consistency, and genuine connection.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting a business from the ground up—especially while raising kids and managing a household—has tested me in ways I didn’t expect. There were financial hurdles, long nights spent worrying if I made the right choice, and moments where I had to wear every hat: stylist, contractor, marketing team, bookkeeper, and janitor. Renovating the shop myself while still working full-time was exhausting, but I was determined to create a space that felt like home—for me and for my clients.

On a personal level, balancing the emotional weight of life outside of work with the professional responsibility of showing up for every client was one of the biggest challenges. There were days I felt overwhelmed and unsure, but I kept going. I leaned on my community, trusted the vision, and reminded myself that I was building something lasting—not just for me, but for my family and the people who walk through my doors.

Those struggles taught me resilience. They made me more resourceful, more compassionate, and more intentional about the kind of business I want to run.

Consistency. In this industry, skill matters—but consistency is what builds trust. I show up every day ready to give my best, whether it’s the first cut of the morning or the last one before closing.
