Today we’d like to introduce you to Samer AbouZaki.
Hi Samer, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As an accomplished Creative Video Production Director/Content Creator, I’ve had an exciting 14-year journey. I started my career as a contractor for Microsoft’s XBOX division while working as a freelance Videographer/Photographer.
During my almost 6-year stint at XBOX, I filmed and edited marketing content, captured in-game footage, and produced narrative stories like Alan Wake’s “Night Springs.” I also worked as a Steadicam Operator/editor for music festivals, filming artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, and Drake.
Later, I transferred to Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Studios as a full-time Video Production Director, where I created original content for Microsoft and its HoloLens clients. I’ve managed, captured, and edited content for global teams and executives at Microsoft and executed marketing campaigns for Fortune 100 corporations, small businesses, and celebrity athletes like Richard Sherman, Michael Vick, Floyd Mayweather, and many more.
Collaborating with creative agencies to bring brands to life through storytelling is a highlight of my journey, and I look forward to continuing to create compelling content that engages and inspires audiences.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every road worth traveling has its fair share of bumps. I encountered several struggles, many of which were out of my control. For instance, I had to deal with common issues early in my career, such as defective hard drives, equipment malfunctions during shoots, computers that stop working prior to deadlines. Personal events like that time when my house unexpectedly burned down, during peak COVID, days before an out-of-state film shoot with Kyler Murray.
However, I’ve always believed that with every problem, there must be a solution. To cope, I learned to make the most of every moment, good or bad. I approached every situation with a future-oriented mindset, setting myself up for success by focusing on things I could control.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Content Creator with over 14 years of experience, I specialize in crafting compelling stories through various mediums such as video, photo, and digital. My approach is to fully understand the client’s vision and use my knowledge of the tools at my disposal to bring their story to life in the way they envision it.
My career has gifted me with several key specialties I’ve honed in on that set my work apart. I prioritize being easy to work with and making sure everyone on set feels comfortable and at ease. This not only leads to a more enjoyable experience but also results in a better final product.
As an artist behind a camera, I learned I have a keen eye for capturing moments that others may miss. Whether it’s the subtle smile between two people or a musician throwing a peace sign mid-performance, I believe that these moments are what make a story truly special.
Lastly, I value the importance of constantly learning and growing in my craft. I have found that even those without a creative background can provide valuable feedback that can enhance the final product. I take pride in encouraging individuals to step out of their comfort zone and contribute to the creative process.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I have personally experienced the challenges of working on set during the pandemic. There were times when we were unsure whether we should keep our masks on or not, placed in the middle of large gatherings where many are without a mask, focusing on getting your shot and staying focused on the creative. Some studios were not available to rent, which forced us to be resourceful and creative. For example, we would book a hotel suite and transform it into a set by rearranging furniture.
As a creator, these experiences taught me the importance of being adaptable and resourceful. These skills came in handy after I was laid off from Microsoft in December, as they helped me keep my own business afloat and maintain a steady income-producing consistent work.
